Australian Apprenticeships and Pre-apprenticeships

What is an Australian Apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship?

Australian Apprenticeships is a term to describe the traineeships and the traditional apprenticeships available under the Australian Government scheme. An Australian Appenticeship offers an exciting and flexible program where students learn industry skills by combining on-the-job paid work at the workplace with training and theory at NMIT. Qualifications are recognised throughout Australia.

Pre-apprenticeships take up to six months and prepare students for apprenticeships by teaching them the basic skills they need. Students do not need an employer to sponsor them for a pre-apprenticeship.

NMIT offers apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship courses in agriculture & animal science, building structures & services, computer systems & electrotechnology, design drafting & interior fittings, hairdressing, hospitality, jewellery, locksmithing and mechanical manufacturing.

How to get an Australian Apprenticeship?

Students need to find an employer or group training company willing to employ them under the Australian Apprenticeship scheme. Once the position has been found, the employer will need to contact a Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) to organise all the agreements and the training component.

Where to look...

There are a number of ways to look for a Australian Apprenticeship. Students can contact employers directly, look in the employment section of newspapers, visit CENTRELINK, register with a number of employment agencies or use personal contacts.

Why NMIT?

Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE is the major Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in the northern suburbs and has a reputation for both quality and flexibility in delivery.
