Study Grant Process for Continuing Students

What is a study grant?
Study grants are awarded to currently enrolled students to reward academic excellence and to acknowledge enthusiasm and commitment to their studies.
Study grants are generously donated by industry and business sponsors to assist NMIT students in achieving their academic goals.
A study grant may be a financial grant, equipment or international/national work experience. |

What study grants can I apply for?
Students are invited to apply for the 'Open Category' study grants. There are currently twenty one 'Open Category' student grants being offered in 2008.
Study grants are also awarded by teaching departments. Students do not apply for these. |

What is an Open Category study grant?
An Open Category study grant means it is not designated to a specific study area.
All full-time students enrolled in a government-funded TAFE course at any NMIT campus and who meet the eligibility requirements can apply for an open category study grant. Study grants may have additional criteria outlined on the application form. |

What is a Department Awarded study grant?
These study grants are assigned to specific course areas. Teaching departments nominate and select students for these awards.
Student nominations are assessed against eligibility criteria and selection criteria. Students cannot apply for these study grants. |

What happens after my application has been lodged?
- Study Grant Applicants will receive a letter confirming receipt of application within approximately two weeks of the closing date.
- After the closing date, applications will be viewed by a selection panel.

Can I apply for a Continuing Student study grant?
Any student enrolled in a full-time governement funded TAFE course at NMIT in 2007 and 2008, and is not an international, full-fee paying or degree student, can apply. |

How do I apply?
You must complete an application form.
As a rule you should include in your application a Curriculum Vitae highlighting employment, community services, hobbies and other interests, photocopies of your academic records and a statement in support of your study grant application. |

Can I apply for a study grant online?
No. You must attach a Curriculum Vitae, academic reports and written references in support of your application. Applicants are required to provide the original application plus two copies [3 copies of each page in total] for the selection panel. |

Can I apply for more than one study grant?
Yes, however you will only be granted one study grant in 2008. When applying for more than one study grant you must complete a separate application form and provide two copies of each application (3 copies of each page in total). |

Are there specific criteria for each study grant?
Yes, applicants must be enrolled in a full-time governement-funded TAFE course in 2007and re-enrolling in 2008.
International students, full-fee paying students and degree students are ineligible to apply.
Some study grants additional criteria, these are specified on the application form. |

Are there conditions placed on study grants?
Yes, all study grants have conditions placed on them. Study grants are conditional depending on your academic progress and any other special eligibilty requirements. |

How will I receive my study grant?
Most study grants will be presented at an annual awards ceremony. Successful applicants will be notified by mail to attend an information session and an official presentation ceremony held in April. Successful recipients must attend the information session and presentation to receive their award. There are some study grants awarded later in the year and a presentation will be held within the department. |

Will I have to pay tax on my study grant?
Most study grants are not taxable - each applicant is advised to seek their own advice on this matter. |

How will I know if my application has reached the Awards Officer?
You will be notified by mail within two weeks of the closing date. If you have not received a letter confirming receipt of your application within this period you should contact the Corporate Communications Department. |

Can I be an NMIT Ambassador?
Ambassador Program application forms are available from the Student Recruitment Officer.
Ambassadors represent NMIT at a variety of functions eg: school visits, campus tours, expos, careers events etc. |
