A new qualification on the education block!
Meet the Associate Degree:
So you have heard of certificates and diplomas and degrees, but have you heard of associate degrees. An associate degree sits beside an advanced diploma but it sits in the higher education basket. Associate degrees have come about because the world of work requires its workers to have a diverse skill mix.
An associate degree focuses on academic knowledge and high vocational skills to meet the needs of industry. Students undertake a six-month practical placement, which will meet the demands of employers who want graduates with relevant work experience. Students will complete the course “work ready”.
NMIT will commence associate degrees in International Business, International Business Management and Accounting in 2008. The duration is two years after which students can articulate into the third year of a Bachelor of Business at La Trobe University. Students will be able to choose between several degree options thereby increasing the flexibility of their final qualification. Other universities may also accept students into either second or third year of a Bachelor of Business on a case-by-case basis. It may even be possible to transfer into a two-year post-grad primary teaching course. The associate degrees are full-time and full-fee paying. FEE-HELP is available.
Why would I do an associate degree and not go directly into a degree?
NMIT’s associate degrees are taught in a TAFE environment therefore you will get all the advantages of a TAFE education;
- Smaller class size
- Individual tutition
- Easy access to teachers
- A more nurturing environment
- Acquire practical “work ready” skills and knowledge
Another advantage of going to TAFE first is that it will make you “uni ready”. Many student drop out of university because they find the style of teaching hard to manage along with adjusting to the new social and physical environment. Spending some time in a TAFE beforehand can help overcome these problems and make success at university more likely.
