Design at Greensborough

NMIT - Brent McGregor
Brent McGregor at the new CAD lab

Design has come to NMIT Greensborough campus in a big way this year.  Responding to a gap in the market and a growing local demand for design courses, NMIT and its Design, Drafting & Interior Fittings department has commenced programs in Interior Design & Decoration, Building, and Building Design & Technology at Greensborough. Each course has enrolled one group in its first year program, with plans to continue through to second year in 2008. To meet the demands of these programs, facilities have been refurbished. There is now a brand new CAD lab and drawing room as well as multipurpose classrooms. Part-time, evening and short courses at the campus will hopefully run in the future.

The establishment of these programs has been overseen by the new Head of Department, Brent McGregor. Brent was only appointed to the position at the end of 2006 and his first task was to ensure that all refurbishments were completed and that new equipment was in the rooms before classes commenced. With the support of his staff, they managed to get it all together with only a couple of hours to spare. With zeal, staff got their hands dirty and gave up their free time to build and set up the new facilities. Brent appreciated the effort by all the staff.

Brent is a qualified furniture maker and like all good furniture makers, did his apprenticeship at NMIT some time ago. Most of his working life has been in the northern suburbs. Prior to coming to NMIT, he was working in a large furniture making business and found himself spending more and more time supervising the apprentices. This additional role put him back in contact with NMIT and the teaching staff. In 2002, he was asked to do some sessional teaching and in 2003, became a full-time teacher when one of his old trade teachers retired.  It is a credit to Brent’s ability that he was appointed HOD with only a few years teaching experience.

NMIT Greensborough campus has a very comfortable feel about it. Students from different courses mingle together in the café and recreational areas. Greensborough based horticulture students look after the gardens which add to the pleasant ambiance.  The campus is fairly compact so it’s easy to get around and has plenty of student carparks. Its “highpoint” is that it’s located on top of Flintoff Hill, which is the highest point in metropolitan Melbourne and offers a 360 degree view of the city, the Plenty and Dandenong Ranges, and Mt Macedon. The views of the CBD are spectacular. Brent tells me the views are conducive to good design but I think they might be more distracting!
