A New Degree for NMIT

Yet another degree hits NMIT's growing list of Higher Education programs. NMIT has just received approval from the Higher Education Regulation Division to run a Bachelor of Hospitality Management program. The program will commence in 2008 and will be run from the Preston campus. NMIT has eight programs in its Higher Education bag.

NMIT is a well established provider of hospitality training in Victoria and runs programs out of its Preston and Collingwood campuses. Running a degree program is a logical extension to its already large range of vocational courses. Starting with a pre-app in cookery and a themed VCAL in hospitality, NMIT programs progress through certificates to advanced diplomas. The Tourism and Hospitality faculty was the first to run dual diplomas in hospitality management and event management, which gave the students two qualifications in the same time it normally took to do one. With its six-unit kitchens NMIT is one of the largest providers of cookery apprenticeship training in Victoria. The faculty also offers a wide range of short courses.

The Bachelor of Hospitality Management uniqueness is that it will provide a broad understanding of the hospitality industry rather than a narrow focus in one particular area. It acknowledges that hospitality is a very diverse industry and for graduating students to succeed in it they require broad understanding of it.

Students will study three key areas, Food & Beverage, Accommodation, and Event Management. NMIT’s strong industry links that are already established through its vocational course’s will be drawn upon. There will also be a strong industry focus through NMIT’s already well-established hospitality facilities, such as St Georges Restaurant and the newly opened conference facilities at Preston, Epping and Heidelberg.

Some other advantages of completing a degree program within a TAFE institute is that students get all the benefits of a TAFE learning environment such as smaller class sizes, student-focused teaching and ready access to teaching staff out of class time. The course is full fee paying at $12 000 per year, but FEE-HELP is available. Students will be able to pathway from an Advanced Diploma in Hospitality directly into the second year of the degree. The advantages of this is that they will graduate with two qualifications and save up to $10 000.
