Jet Setting Roxanne

NMIT has been running a student ambassador program for nearly ten years. Students are nominated by their department. The student ambassadors assist with tours, expos, school visits etc. Using students is a great way to showcase NMIT. The students are experiencing NMIT firsthand therefore they can tell prospective students what their experience has been like.

Been an ambassador is purely a voluntary thing. However students find it a very rewarding experience and it often helps them with the next stage in their career. They get to meet NMIT students from totally different areas and speak to a wide range of people through the events they do. As well they are eligible for one of three study grants that are only open to student ambassadors. At the end of each year they can apply for one $4000 and two $1000 study grants. The winners receive their grant at the Study Grant presentation in April the following year.

In 2006 the major study grant was awarded to Roxanne Watts. She used her grant to follow an obsession and go on a fabulous jewellery tour in England. Below is a description of her tour.

In 2005-06 I was an NMIT student doing an Advanced Diploma in Engineering -Jewellery Manufacturing. I was chosen by my teachers to be a student ambassador. I had a lot of fun as an ambassador, meeting and talking to prospective students, as well the other ambassadors and NMIT staff. I also applied for an ambassador study grant and I was thrilled to be awarded the major grant of $4000.

The objective of my study tour was to travel to Whitby in England which is the home of jet. Whitby jet is a fossilised wood that is light in weight and has a beautiful jet-black colour. It was highly prized and used in the Victorian Era in mourning jewellery. It is still highly prized, becoming rare and therefore getting hard to acquire.

In Whitby I planned to research the various techniques used in carving jet and hopefully get some training and to purchase some Whitby jet. This training is not available in Australia. I had become a little obsessed with jet during my course and travelling to Whitby and experiencing it in its home town became a dream. Getting the scholarship allowed me to full-fill my dream.

I had to be interviewed for the scholarship, in which I gave a presentation of my aim, my proposed itinerary and how I would go about it. I also provided information on what Jet is, the history associated with it. As well I showed samples of pieces I had made using a European jet material. The other really important thing I did was take chocolate mud muffins to the interview, who can resist chocolate! Hence to say it worked!

Planning my tour did take a lot of time and research and caused some anxious moments, but it all fell into place in the last month before I left. I am still obsessed about jet and am continuing my studies in jewellery making, now at degree level at university.
