Jewellery Versus Jewellery - Two Very Different Courses at NMIT
NMIT runs two courses that have a Jewellery component in them and that can be confusing. They are very different courses with different learning and employment outcomes.
Based at NMIT’s Greensborough campus is the Diploma of Product Design. This course is run by the Visual Arts Department. The emphasis of this course is on product design, product development and/or contemporary jewellery design industries. Product design refers to the whole process from the original idea, right through to manufacture of the item. A lot of work is done on the computer doing two/three dimension drawings. The emphasis is more on objects such as cutlery and bottle openers. If it does include jewellery, it tends not to be wearable. This is a very creative course.
Students will find employment as a self-employed designer or work in a design workshop. It can also be a pathway to a Bachelor of Industrial Design.

Diploma of Product Design
The second course is the Diploma of Engineering Technology (Jewellery). It is run by the Mechanical Manufacturing Department and is based at the Fairfield campus. The emphasis of this course is jewellery design and making. The jewellery that are designed and made are meant to be worn. They are not objects as such but usable pieces such as earrings, necklaces and brooches. There is also a large design component. Students will cover the full gamut of jewellery from its history, to the nature of different products used in jewellery making and even how to establish and manage a jewellery business. Students will spend a lot of time doing very fine handwork with various metals.

Diploma of Engineering Technology (Jewellery)
Students will find employment as a self employed Jeweller or working with an established Jeweller. It can also be a pathway to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Jewellery).
