Tours, Tasters and Talks - Updated Info
Tours, tasters and talks are a great way for students to experience TAFE life. I find once they get onto campus and see what is available and what the facilities look like they begin to think differently about TAFE as an option.
Tours can be organised on any campus and can be run for small groups to whole class groups. A tour usually takes about 1 to 1 ½ hours. For schools touring the Preston campus, I encourage them to combine it with lunch in either the bistro or restaurant. For larger groups we can organise a "school rate" at the restaurant. For many students sitting down and been waited upon may be the first time they have eaten at a restaurant. This also gives them a first hand opportunity to see our students working in a classroom situation. If possible, NMIT student ambassadors will be involved in the tours and will be able to give them a first hand account of life from a student's perspective.
NMIT will be running a full Taster Week program during TAFE week between 31st July and 4th August - Taste TAFE @ NMIT. This time may not suit everyone and the program will be only for year 10, 11 or 12 students. I can organise tasters on requests in just about any area as long as you can guarantee the minimum number of students. This is usually between 12 and 16 students. In some cases were materials are used a small charge may apply. Tasters can be half or whole days. A half-day taster can be made into a whole day by including a campus tour and lunch in the bistro. I am happy to organise a taster for a group of your students. Contact me to discuss the possibilities. They are just about endless.
Tours and tasters can also incorporate a targeted talk. In a regular tour, information is given about the types of courses available, the facilities and general information on applying to NMIT, classroom practices and life as a student. If you prefer, your students can have a PowerPoint presentation before the tour, written to your requirements. This will give your students an opportunity to sit in one of the classrooms and get a deeper understanding of most aspects of TAFE.
