Course Description

This course is designed to provide appropriate training for people involved in the animal care environment.
It is highly recommended that whilst undertaking this qualification, students complete a minimum of two weeks work placement in an animal care environment.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain employment in the animal care environment as an animal attendant.

Course Duration

Part-time: One year

Course Commencement Dates

February. Only mid year if required.

Entrance Requirements

Students must be prepared to participate in work placement. An interview may be required upon acceptance of application.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Students who complete this course can go on to other certificates in the Animal Care and Management Package.

Course Outline

RUV2101A Work in the animal care industry (20 hrs)
RUV2102A Follow OH&S procedures in an animal care environment (40 hrs)
RUV2103A Assist with general animal care (80 hrs)
RUV2104A Provide food and water for animals (30 hrs)
RUV2105A Participate in workplace communications (20 hrs)
RUV2107A Provide basic first aid for animals (30 hrs)
RUV2501A Provide information on companion animal services and products (60 hrs)
RUV2601A Carry out veterinary reception duties (30 hrs)
RUV2602A Carry out daily clinic routines (40 hrs)
RUV2603A Assist with surgery preparations (40 hrs)
RTC2704A Provide basic first aid (10 hrs)

Total Hours - 400

Extra elective units offered part-time in the evening

RUV2108A Rescue animals and apply basic animal care (30 hrs)
RUV3401A Rehabilitate and release native wildlife (50 hrs)
RUV3411A Care for Young animals (30 hrs)

Materials

A list of materials will be supplied. Texts and stationary items will be recommended.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate II in Animal Studies.
