Course Description

The aim of this course is to educate students in the specific skills appropriate to the product design and jewellery industries.

The course develops design and manufacturing skills through two-dimensional and three-dimensional design projects. Students gain experience in a wide range of materials including: metal (precious and non-precious), plastics, industrial and organic. Emphasis is placed on learning techniques used in industry such as fabricating with metal and plastic, stone setting, enamelling, soldering and casting. Students are encouraged to interpret these techniques and establish their own design sensibility.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may establish their own product range, gain employment in product design/jewellery-related areas, take up apprenticeships or continue onto further education in industrial design or gold and silver smithing.

Course Duration

Full-time: Two years 

Course Commencement Dates

February.

Entrance Requirements

Successful completion of Year 12 and evidence of basic competence in drawing, motivation and capacity to undertake design orientated studies. All prospective students must attend an interview session where they will be required to present a folio of recent work.

Apply through VTAC.  A supplementary form must also be lodged with the Visual Arts department - Product Design - VTAC code: 68031

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Successful students may continue on to further studies to complete a degree in their specialist field.

Assessment is by course work and folio presentation.
