Course Description

This is an intensive training program designed to give trainees the skills and knowledge necessary to be productive onsite.

Trainees work on full size projects of varying degree, in NMIT's specially designed workshops. Successful completion of this certificate will lead the trainee into Certificate III in General Construction (Painting & Decorating) Apprenticeship.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain employment in the painting and decorating area of the building industry as a trainee in an Australian Apprenticeship.

Course Duration

Full-time: 16 weeks (640 hours)

Course Commencement Dates

February and July.

Entrance Requirements

There are no formal entrance requirements. Applications from sponsored students are invited at any time. Places are also available for a limited number of unsponsored applicants. Applicants will be advised of interviews and intake tests which will be arranged as required.

A painter who wishes to sponsor a student must given written notice to NMIT that he or she intends to apprentice the student when they successfully complete their fifteen week program. Every effort is made by teaching staff to find employment for unsponsored students.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Applicants will receive exemptions/transfers where they can:

  • Provide evidence of successful completion of the same module/competency at another Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or within another accredited course
  • Provide evidence of successful completion of an equivalent module/competency at another RTO or within another accredited course
  • Demonstrate and/or provide evidence of competence via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Applications should be made directly to the course co-ordinator.

Pathways to Further Study

On successful completion of this course, participants will be granted 480 hours (12 weeks) credit in the Certificate III in General Construction (Painting & Decorating) Apprenticeship.

To successfully obtain the painting and decorating pre-apprenticeship, students must obtain a pass in all of the following modules:

VBQM705 Levelling (8hrs)
VBQM706 Quality principles for the building industry (8hrs)
VBQM707 Safe handling and use of plant and power tools (16hrs)
VBQM708 Workplace documents and plans (20hrs)
VBQM725 Painting and decorating hand tools (40hrs)
VBQM726 Surface preparation (80hrs)
VBQM727 Paint principles (12hrs)
VBQM728 Colour theory and practice (32hrs)
VBQM729 Paint application (140hrs)
VBQM720 Timber staining and clear finishing principles (40hrs)
VBQM721 Protective metal coating (40hrs)
VBQM722 Spray painting (32hrs)
VBQM723 Paperhanging principles (20hrs)

Assessment Methods

Student assessment will combine progressive testing and internal assessment.

Materials

All materials are supplied as part of enrolment fees. Equipment lists are available from the Building Structures & Services Department.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate II in Building & Construction (Painting & Decorating) Pre-apprenticeship.
