Course Description

Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical)

This qualification is designed to reflect the role of entry level employees working in accounting who perform routine duties such as: accounts payable/accounts receivable, payroll, cashier, preparation of trial balance, bookkeeping, cash receipts/cash payments, purchases and sales, manual and computerised systems and preparation of financial reports.

Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting)

This qualification is designed to reflect the role of employees who perform duties such as: completion of BAS and other office taxes, operational reporting, production of basic management reports, production of basic job costing reports, preparation of budgets, supervising the operation of computer based systems, classifying, recording and reporting of accounting information, maintaining inventory records managing a small office and making decisions in a legal context.

Diploma of Accounting

This qualification is designed to reflect the role of employees who perform such duties as: introducing and maintaining accounting systems, maintaining internal control systems, preparing financial statements for a reporting entity, preparing tax returns, reporting on business performance, managing small teams, developing business plans and preparing management accounting reports.

Advanced Diploma of Accounting

This is the industry specified pathway for persons wishing to practice as a qualified accountant. This qualification is designed to reflect the role of employees working as accountants who perform duties such as: tax planning, evaluating business performance (financial modeling) perform internal and external audit functions, perform and supervise audits, management financial planning and managing a team or department.

Professional Membership and Recognition

Courses are developed under the Australian Qualifications Framework in close consultation with industry and professional associations.

Satisfactory completion of the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) entitles the graduate to join the Association of Accounting Technicians.

Satisfactory completion of the Advanced Diploma of Accounting entitles the graduate to make application to join the National Institute of Accountants, one of the three peak accounting bodies representing accountants in Australia.

Consistent with previous arrangements in place, the satisfactory completion of the Advanced Diploma of Accounting including passes in the prescribed taxation units will satisfy the academic requirements for registration as a tax agent with the Tax Agents' Board.

Course Duration

The duration of each course will be dependent upon the existing competencies that a student is able to demonstrate (see Exemptions).

Concurrent studies in specified units may also effect the duration of the course.

The Commerce Department structures courses such that students studying full-time will complete qualifications as listed below within the following time frames:

Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) - Full-time: Six months

Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting) - Full-time: One year

Diploma of Accounting - Full-time: 18 months

Advanced Diploma of Accounting - Full-time: Two years

All courses may be offered an equivalent part time basis. Units may be studied both on campus and via flexible learning arrangements.

Course Commencement Dates

Full-time: February and July.
Part-time: February, July and ongoing.

Entrance Requirements

There are no formal entrance requirements to the course. Applicants must be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Department that they are capable of completing the course having regard to the relevant competence levels of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Application Procedure

Full-time: Apply through VTAC .
Part-time: Apply directly to the Commerce Department.

Enrolment sessions are held in November, December, January, February and June.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) may be available based on skills and knowledge already acquired by the applicant through previous study, equivalent studies of a similar standard at another institution or from various work and life skills. Details and application procedures are available from the Head of Department Commerce, or program coordinators at each campus.

Pathways to Further Study

The successful completion of the Diploma of Accounting or the Advanced Diploma of Accounting may allow students to continue study into a range of other tertiary programs.

Entrance requirements and exemptions vary between course and university.

Successful completion of four industry core units plus five sectoral units and four elective units.

Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting)
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting).

Diploma of Accounting
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Diploma of Accounting.

Advanced Diploma of Accounting
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Accounting.
