Course Description

Certificate IV in Business (International Trade)

This course provides individuals with a broad range of business skills and knowledge specialising in international business and trade. Topics include presentation and communication skills, customer service, international marketing and business analysis, domestic and international market research, risk management, international finance, international law and international trade conventions. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of theory to "real world" and actual business situations.

Diploma of International Business

This course provides individuals with a practical understanding of international business and marketing theory, management, international trade and finance, international market segmentation and analysis, international forecasting and strategic planning. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of theory to "real world" and actual business situations.

Advanced Diploma of Business (International Business)

This course provides individuals with a practical understanding in a range of specialist international business and trade areas such as international business management and finance, international contract law, international logistics management, international trade relationships, and international business opportunity analysis and research. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of theory to "real world" and actual business situations.

Courses are developed under the Australian Qualifications Framework and Victorian Qualifications Authority (VQA), in close consultation with industry organisations and professional associations.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of these courses may gain employment in management, supervision and operation of marketing activities in the international arena.

Course Duration

The duration of each course will be dependent on the pre-existing competencies that a student is able to demonstrate (see exemptions). Concurrent studies in specified units may also affect the duration of the course.

The Commerce Department structure courses so that students studying full-time will complete the qualifications as listed below within the following time frames:

Certificate IV in Business (International Trade):
Six months to one year

Diploma of International Business:
One to one and a half years

Advanced Diploma of Business (International Business): One to two years

Course Commencement Dates

February and July.

Entrance Requirements

Certificate IV in Business (International Trade) and Diploma of International Business: There are no formal entrance requirements to these courses. Applicants must be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Department that they are capable of completing the course having regard to the relevant competency levels in the training documents.

Advanced Diploma of Business (International Business): Satisfactory completion of the Certificate IV in Business (International Trade) and the Diploma of International Business. Students will also be required to satisfactorily complete additional units as stated in the training documents.

Application Procedure

Full-time: Apply for the Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma through VTAC.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) may be available based on skills and knowledge already acquired by the applicant through previous study or equivalent studies of a similar standard at another institution or from various work and life skills.

Pathways to Further Study

The Diploma of International Business and Advanced Diploma of Business (Business) may be used for entrance into an associate degree or degree course in the higher education sector. Entrance requirements vary with course and university.

Plus a language from a selected country or region (100 to 120 hrs - elective)

Assessment Methods

Various forms of assessment may be used including: classroom testing, assignments, presentations, group work, case studies and industry or simulated industry practicum.

Materials

Students will be required to purchase prescribed text books and other materials as detailed in the Commerce Department booklist.

Qualification

Certificate IV in Business (International Business)
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Business (International Trade).

Diploma of International Business
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Diploma of International Business.

Advanced Diploma of Business (International Business)
This qualification is accredited by the Victorian Qualifications Authority (VQA). On successful completion students will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Business (International Business).
