The Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE , NMIT Preston, offers an exciting range of courses within the Commerce department. These courses include accounting, international business, marketing, as well as night classes, small business management and e-business. People who arrive at NMIT initially know little of what goes on within the accounting, marketing or international business classes. Helping to choose the right course for you is crucial, so let's have a look.
Accounting
Preparing financial reports. Managing budgets and forecasts. Communicating in a workplace. Accounting offers so much more than working with number figures. NMIT offers the Advanced Diploma of Accounting, taking 2 years to complete.

International Business
Exporting and importing goods overseas, developing international business relationships, and expanding businesses overseas. International business can be essential for anyone.

NMIT offers the Advanced Diploma of International Business, taking 2 years to complete.
International Business teaches you a broad range of skills - emphasising actual business situations, presentations, communication skills, finance, contract law, logistics, and practical application to theory.
“I think that due to globalisation and due to companies wanting to export into export markets there is going to be huge movement in international trade. I think from that we need personnel, experienced and trained personnel to undertake courses such as the ones at NMIT, to be able to get jobs at these big firms”. - Luciano Raco.
International Business graduates can gain employment in management, supervision, and the operation of marketing activities in the international arena.
Marketing
NMIT teaches you how to reach out to the real world. Pushing you for a new career be it within marketing, advertising or public relations. NMIT offers the Advanced Diploma of Marketing which takes 2 years, part time.

Marketing is taught through a massive range of business skills within presentation, communication, and understanding later, areas such as business law, economics, and management.

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework, all programs are nationally recognised, taking 2 years maximum. Kick starting your career earlier than most other fields of study.
Small Business
Small Business at NMIT provides essential training for owners/managers and people who wish to gain management, knowledge and skills in legal requirements necessary to establish their own business.
“Eventually at some stage down the track, I want to start up my own small business with my fiancé. She's a florist. The industry I'm working in at the moment is what I want to branch off into. I want to use some ideas I've got from that industry to start my own business as well. It's just for future development and future gain and all that kind of stuff”. - Richard Verhagan, Certificate IV in Small Business Management student.
The aim of the program is to help assist people establish self employment opportunities as well as provide further skills for existing owners and managers.
“Well I guess my areas of interest in the small business classes are more around the financial stuff. To learn how to prepare financial reports and do my finances. The theory stuff, the research components are pretty much self explanatory I think, but the financial stuff is really important and that's where my interest lies” - Richard Verhagan.
NMIT offers the Certificate IV in Business, Small Business Management, running for 1 year, 2 evenings per week part-time.
E-Business
Communication is always being improved through emailing, websites, and business expanding with the easy accessibility of companies with one click of a button.
“I chose to start the e-business course because I did marketing here last year and we covered some of the e-business subjects as part of the marketing course. I thought that this is something that I wanted to further expand my knowledge in”. - Natasha Su'a, Diploma of E-Business student.

NMIT offers a Diploma of E-Business to anyone studying at NMIT, running for 1 year, 2 evenings per week.

Tuition contributions are calculated for each nominal enrolled hour or part of the course. A further discount can be available if one holds a health care card, pensioner card or Veterans gold card.
