Course Description

This prevocational course offers students the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for entry in to apprenticeship training in the furniture industry.
During the course, students are given the opportunity to develop and apply skills and knowledge during production of specific projects.
Although it is not a compulsory pre-requisite for an apprenticeship, graduates from this course are continually sought by industry for employment as apprentices, during which they complete the Certificate III apprenticeship training.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain cabinet making apprenticeships working with timber to produce furniture fittings.

Course Duration

Full-time: 19 weeks X 40 hours per week

Course Commencement Dates

February and July.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Students who complete this course will qualify for significant credits/exemptions within the furniture making or cabinet making apprenticeships. In addition to this, successful students receive a reduction in the duration of their apprenticeship.

LMFFM2001A Use furniture making sector hand and power tools (40 hrs)

LMFFM2006A Hand make timber joins (40 hrs)
LMFFM2010A Set up, operate and maintain basic static machines (56 hrs)
LMFFM3002A Construct furniture, using leg and rail method (64 hrs)

Assessment Methods

Assessment for this course is competency based. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate competence by satisfactorily completing the specified theory based tasks and practical projects.

Participants of this course are required to purchase specific texts and materials. Contact the department for more information.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate II in Furnishing (Furniture Manufacturing) .
