Course Description

This course is designed to train registered apprentices in the specific skills required for competence within the furniture manufacture industry.
Students undertake training in various skill areas which include but are not limited to occupational health and safety, interpretation of plans and documentation, basic drafting, safe operation of hand tools, power tools and woodworking machinery, furniture construction techniques.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain employment as cabinet makers or furniture manufacturers working within the furnishing industry.

Course Duration

Part-time: Three years
947 hours of training in Cabinet Making.
959 hours of training in Furniture Making.

Course Commencement Dates

Ongoing enrolments.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must be registered as an apprentice in this qualification.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Students who have completed their Cert. III training may choose to do further post-apprenticeship studies in associated fields.

Course Outline

Stage 1: Mandatory core units

Stage 2: Mandatory sector specialist units

Stage 3: Mandatory cross-industry sector units

Stage 4: Elective units / specialist units

Each trainee must complete all mandatory core units in stage 1, all mandatory sector specialist units in stage 2, all mandatory cross/industry sector units in stage 3 and a range of electives which are selected in consultation with the trainees employer.

Assessment Methods

Assessment for this course is competency based. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate competence by satisfactorily completing the specified theory based tasks and practical projects.

Participants of this course are required to purchase specific texts and materials. Contact the department for more information.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate III in Furniture Making (Cabinet Making) or the Certificate III in Furniture Making.
