| Course Description
This prevocational course offers students the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for entry in to apprenticeship training in the building and construction industry.
During the course, students are given the opportunity to develop and apply skills and knowledge during production of specific projects.
Although it is not a compulsory pre-requisite for an apprenticeship, graduates from this course are continually sought by industry for employment as apprentices, during which they complete the Certificate III apprenticeship training.

Graduates of this course may gain employment in the joinery, stairbuilding or shopfitting areas of the building industry as a trainee in an Australian Apprenticeship.

3 X one week blocks Basic Skills
2 X one week blocks Prep. Skills
4 X one week blocks Construction Projects
2 X one week blocks Static Machines / PPT's
5 X one week blocks Specific Industry Skills
Total: 16 weeks = 642 hrs

| Entrance Requirements
Provided a person is over 15 years of age, he or she can apply for a position in this course. Preference is generally given to those who have at least completed Year 10 or 11.
Sponsorship may be obtained before training takes place. A sponsor is the prospective employer who assures the pre-apprentice employment after the first 16 weeks of NMIT training. Sponsorship is not compulsory for entry into this course.

| Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers
Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

| Pathways to Further Study
Students who complete this course will qualify for significant credits/exemptions within the Certificate III in Offsite Construction apprenticeship qualification. In addition to this, successful students receive a reduction in the duration of their apprenticeship.

| Assessment Methods
Assessment for this course is competency based. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate competence by satisfactorily completing the specified theory based tasks and practical projects.

| Qualification
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate II in Joinery/Stairbuilding/Shopfitting.
