Course Description

The program is for adults who left school in their lower or secondary school years or who missed opportunities to learn. It aims to further develop participants' reading and writing, numeracy, oral communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills. 

Program content is dependent on the needs of students and subjects offered depend on the availability of resources. The program provides experience and competence in a wide range of literacies needed for:

  • participation in the workplace
  • access to further study and training
  • participation in the community
  • independent self expression and critical thinking

Career Opportunities

Students are eligible to apply for entry into a range of courses depending on their level within the CGEA.

Course Duration

Full time and part time is available.

Each certificate takes approximately one to two years to complete.

Enrolment is ongoing. Students can study from ten to twenty hours per week. Classes are available during the day and evening.

Ongoing.

Entrance Requirements

All applicants are interviewed before placement in the program.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Depending on their individual needs and progress, students may undertake more specific subjects as outlined below or move into mainstream study.

Course Outline

Students enrol in the Certificates in General Education for Adults (CGEA). Students enrol in core units and specialist core skills and are offered a range of special interest electives to assist them to construct their own learning pathway. Students negotiate their learning pathways with staff and are offered subjects organised under the following modules. Special Interest Elective units are common to all certificate levels and are listed after the core units and skills. In addition, a range of competencies from relevant Training Packages may be offered as electives.

Assessment Methods

There are no exams. Assessment is continuous and ongoing, focusing on the process of learning as well as the competencies stated in the modules of the CGEA.

Materials

A range of materials and equipment are used during the course and students are provided with photocopied worksheets on a day to day basis.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework these programs are nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Course in Initial General Education for Adults, Certificate I in General Education for Adults (Introductory), Certificate I, II and/or III in General Education for Adults.
