Course Description

This course is designed to provide a pathway qualification into community services work with a focus on children’s services.

   It provides an introduction into a range of children’s services including long day care, occasional child care, nanny care, and out of school hours care. The course suits people who are currently at school, have left school recently, , want to return to work after some time out of the workforce, or want to change careers and need to re-train in community services work.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may use this certificate as a pathway to further studies or work in community services such as child care, aged care, people with disabilities, social housing, leisure and health industry, home and community care, drug and alcohol work, and people with mental health issues.

Course Duration

Part-time: 9 months (1 day per week on Wednesday, 9am - 4pm)

Entrance Requirements

All applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrate interest in, work in the community services field
  • Have physical and psychological health necessary to meet course requirements including practicum
  • Demonstrate maturity including ability to be responsible for the care and education of children
  • Be able to read and comprehend course requirements
  • Be able to express themselves fluently verbally and in writing.
  • For applicants whose first language is not English, the recommended level of English skills (comprehension and written) needed to complete this course is ISLPR 3+.

All applications to be made directly to the department . Applicants who meet the selection criteria will be interviewed.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Students who successfully complete this course may apply to articulate into the Certificate III in Children's Services, Certificate IV in Out of School Hours Care or Diploma of Children's Services through the application / selection process.

Course Outline

To achieve the Certificate a student must achieve the 5 compulsory units plus 6 elective units. Electives have been selected to give a broad coverage of work in the sector.

Follow occupational health and safety procedures (30 hrs)
CHCOR2B Work with others (15 hrs)
CHCRF1B Work effectively with families in caring for the child (25 hrs)
CHCICAB Communicate with children (30)
CHCCN1D Ensure children's health and safety (30 hrs)
CHCFC1C Support the development of children in the service (40 hrs)
CHCPRIC Deliver services/activities to stimulate children's development and enhance children's development (40 hrs)

 

Assessment Methods

Assessment for each competency will be through a combination of 'on the job' (practicum) and 'off the job' tasks. 'Off the job' assessment includes the following:

  • class exercises
  • assignments
  • tests
  • practical demonstrations
  • workplace practicum

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion of all competencies students will be awarded the Certificate II in Community Services Work.
