Course Description

This national qualification covers workers who provide a range of services and interventions to clients. Work may take place in a range of contexts such as community-based organisations, residential services, youth and outreach services. The program aims to develop students' knowledge and skills in relation to community services operations, requirements, interventions and client issues. The Certificate IV provides broad opportunities for employment and is regarded by employers as a desirable (and sometimes mandatory) entry-level qualification.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may be employed in the government and non government sector in a variety of community settings, in various positions including youth worker, community support worker, juvenile justice worker, support worker, residential worker and programs officer.

Course Duration

Full-time: One year
Part-time: Two years

Course Commencement Dates

February.

Entrance Requirements

Prospective students are expected to have the literacy skills appropriate for both the demands of the training and the workplace. Applicants must be 20 years of age at the commencement of the course.

Apply directly to the Health & Community Studies Department

All prospective applicants are required to attend an information session prior to application. Applicants who meet the selection criteria will be interviewed.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Participants successfully completing this training may apply for entry into the Diploma of Community Welfare Work at TAFE institutes or related university courses.

Assessment Methods

Competencies will be assessed in a variety of modes including:

  • on-the-job demonstration of skills and knowledge
  • written pieces
  • classroom activities.

Materials

All materials are supplied by the Health and Community Studies Department at a maximum cost of $79 per student (price subject to change).

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Community Services Work.
