Course Description

This training is based on the National Community Services/Disability Work Competency Standards and reflects the nationally endorsed industry requirements. The training is designed to provide skills and knowledge required to work within the disability services sector including supported employment, recreation, adult day support services, advocacy, respite and peer support programs.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may be employed in the government and non government sector, in both large residential facilities and community settings. Graduates may work with people with a range of disabilities, including physical, sensory, intellectual and neurological disabilities.

Course Duration

Full-time: One year
Part-time: Two years
Industry groups: As negotiated with specific organisations

Course Commencement Dates

February.

Entrance Requirements

Prospective students are expected to have the literacy skills appropriate for both the demands of the training and the workplace.

Applicants should be 18 years of age at the commencement of the course.

All prospective applicants must attend an information session. Applicants who meet the selection criteria will be interviewed.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Participants successfully completing this training may apply for entry into the Diploma of Community Welfare Work at TAFE institutes or related university courses. Successful applicants may also apply for the Advanced Diploma of Disability Work at NMIT or other TAFE institutes, after gaining two years work experience in the sector.

Course Outline

The training package will include: disability specialisation units of competency and community services common units of competency including:

HLTFA1A Basic first aid (10 hrs)
CHCDIS1C Orientation to disability work (50 hrs)
CHCDIS2C Maintain an environment designed to empower people with a disability (90 hrs)
CHCDIS3C Provide services to people with disabilities (50 hrs)
CHCDIS4B Design procedures for support (90 hrs)
CHCDIS6C Plan and implement community integration (90 hrs)
CHCCOM3C Utilise specialist communications skills to build strong relationships (50 hrs)
CHCCS301A Work within a legal and ethical framework (50 hrs)
CHCOHS401A Implement and monitor occupational health and safety policies and procedures
for a workplace (50 hrs)
CHCORG5B Maintain an effective work environment (50 hrs)
CHCCS405A Work effectively with culturally diverse clients, customers and co-workers (30 hrs)
CHCCS409A Meet the dietary and nutritional needs of clients in a culturally appropriate manner (50 hrs)
CHCDISI6B Provide advanced behaviour support (90 hrs)
CHCDIS13A Work with older people with disabilities (50 hrs)


Total Hours - 810

Assessment Methods

Competencies will be assessed in a variety of modes including:

  • on-the-job demonstrations of skills and knowledge
  • written pieces
  • classroom activities

Materials

All materials will be supplied to students at a cost of up to $79 per student (subject to change). This materials fee makes up part of the total course fees.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Disability Work.
