Course Description

The course will not be running in 2007.

This course is designed to combine theory with practice and aims to provide graduates with the skills, knowledge and values required to work effectively in the Social Housing Sector. Also included is an Alcohol and Other Drugs elective stream, which provides the minimum entry-level requirements to work in the sector. It is intended for existing workers looking to gain qualifications.

Graduates may be employed in the government and non-government sectors in services/programs such as:

  • Crisis Accommodation and Support
  • Transitional Housing
  • Residential Care
  • Tenancy Information and Advice
  • Supported Accommodation and Assistance Program
  • Rooming House
  • Homelessness Outreach
  • Housing Co-operatives.

Course Duration

Part-time: Approximately 18 months – Tuesday 2pm-5pm & 5.30pm-8.30pm

May.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must be at least 20 years of age at the commencement of the course and have completed 12 months paid or unpaid work in the community services sector, particularly residential work. Applicants must have access to an appropriate workplace to undertake workplace-based assessments.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications and/or work experience.

Pathways to Further Study

Participants successfully completing this training may apply for entry into related TAFE or University courses.

Course Outline

The Certificate IV in Social Housing (Residential) is a new course incorporating the following units from the Community Services Training Package:

Units include:

CHCCH1C Orientation to work in social housing
CHCC10C Manage and maintain tenancies
CHCCOM3C Utilise specialist communication skills to build strong relationships
CHCCS301A Work within a legal and ethical framework
CHCCS9A Provide support services to clients
CHCNET4A Work with other services
CHCOHS301A Participate in workplace safety procedures
CHCCD12D Apply a community development framework
CHCCH11B Manage housing applications
CHCCH23A Provide advice to tenants and/or clients

Alcohol & Other Drugs Work Elective Stream:

CHCAOD2C Orientation to alcohol and other drugs work
CHCAOD8C Assess the needs of clients who have alcohol and/or other drug issues
CHCCS402A Respond holistically to client issues
CHCCM3B Develop, facilitate and monitor all aspects of case management.
CHCAOD10A Work with clients who have alcohol and/or other drug issues
CHCAOD11A Provide advanced interventions to meet the needs of clients with alcohol and/or other drug issues.

Assessment Methods

Competencies will be assessed in a variety of modes including written pieces, research reports, class presentations, group work and classroom activities. Classes are interactive and participatory. Assessment tasks are related to workplace experiences.

Materials

Materials will be supplied by NMIT at a cost of $75 per student (subject to change).

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Social Housing (Residential).
