Course Description

This course is designed to combine theory with practice and aims to provide graduates with the skills, knowledge and values required to undertake employment as Social Welfare Workers. It is best suited to people who have some experience of welfare work and/or previous relevant qualifications.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of the course may lead to employment in government or non-government services as a welfare worker, community worker, case manager, client services assessor or family support worker.

Course Duration

Part-time: Three years

Course Commencement Dates

February.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must be aged at least 20 at the commencement of the course and are required to have completed at least one year paid or voluntary welfare-related work for part-time study.
Prospective applicants who meet the selection criteria will be interviewed.

Applicants must attend an information session.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Candidates holding a completed diploma may apply for entry into related university courses.

Course Outline

The Diploma of Community Welfare incorporates the following units from the Community Services Training Package:

CHCCD15B Develop and implement a community development strategy
CHCNET3B Develop new networks
CHCPOL3A Undertake research activities

Materials will be supplied by NMIT at a cost of $79 per student (subject to change).

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Diploma of Community Welfare Work.
