Course Description

The Diploma of Equine Stud Management will cover three main areas:

  1. Practical Horse Management
  2. Business Management
  3. Pasture/Farm/Property/Infrastructure Management.

Students will be required to undertake two blocks of practical placement on a commercial thoroughbred stud during the breeding and yearling preparation/weaning seasons.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain entry into a wide range of occupations available within the horse breeding industry and with any associated equine enterprises such as licensing bodies, equine dentists, transport, media, publishing and bloodstock.

Course Duration

Full-time: Two years

Course Commencement Dates

Late February/early March.

Entrance Requirements

Basic literacy and numeracy skills. Students must complete the unit RGRH207A Handle Horses Safely before beginning this course. The unit will be run for those students who have not completed it prior to the start of the diploma.

Apply directly to the Agriculture and Animal Science Department.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications and/or prior experience.

Pathways to Further Study

Successful completion of the Diploma of Equine Stud Management may lead to study at a Bachelor degree level.

Year 1

VBP142 Develop and implement plans for horse nutrition (100 hrs)
VBP143 Manage the care of stud stock (210 hrs)
VBP144 Health and welfare strategies (150 hrs)
RTE5103A Manage livestock production (180 hrs)
RTC5701A Establish and maintain the enterprise OHS program (90 hrs)

Year 2

VBP146 Develop and monitor business operations (80 hrs)
VBP161 Marketing plans (80 hrs)
RTC2706A Apply chemicals under supervision (30 hrs)
RTC3704A Prepare and apply chemicals 70 hrs)
RTE5014A Manage agricultural crop production (120 hrs)
RTE5101A Develop and implement a breeding strategy (160 hrs)
RTE5516A Whole farm planning (120 hrs)

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods for this course include:

  • Assignments
  • Practical tasks
  • Written and oral tests
  • Written activities.

Materials

Stationery, work clothes and work boots.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Diploma of Equine Stud Management.
