Course Description

The Certificate III in Floristry is a practical-based course. There is an emphasis on the development of sound practical skills, such as aspects of care and selection of cut flowers, plant identification skills and extensive retail skills will be studied. Students are introduced to contemporary techniques and design, whilst being encouraged to develop their individual design skills. Students are actively encouraged to participate in floral competitions.

NMIT provides excellent training facilities for floristry students. These include:

  • Spacious practical workrooms
  • Cool room facility

  • Extensive collection of horticultural material for identification and practical design work

  • Computer laboratory

  • Well-resourced library

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain employment in the floristry enterprises producing floral arrangements and retailing floral work. Graduates may gain employment in the design and production of floral works for weddings, funerals and large-scale events.

Course Duration

The Certificate III in Floristry is approximately 815 hours in duration and is conducted as a part-time course, one day per week over three years. There is the possibility of completing some units of competency in the workplace.

Course Commencement Dates

Courses commence in February. There may be scope for continuous enrolment throughout the year.

Entrance Requirements

Prospective students must be employed in the floristry industry.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students enrolling into this course who have completed studies at other institutions should discuss the possibility of being exempted from related units in this course. If a student can demonstrate a full practical and theoretical understanding of the unit from their work then they may discuss the option of being assessed for this in their workplace. Students are eligible for Skills Recognition.

Students, who are granted exemptions for parts of their course, may negotiate an individual mode of delivery with the course coordinator.

Pathways to Further Study

Successful completion of the Certificate III in Floristry may lead into the Certificate IV in Floristry.

A competency based course assessment is based on student's abilities to achieve unit outcomes. There is the opportunity for workplace delivery and assessment of competencies. Assessment methods include:

All floral materials and sundries provided.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate III in Floristry.
