Course Description

The Certificate IV in Floristry has been designed to develop floristry design and front line event management skills of those working in the floristry industry. It applies to those who are owner/managers of a floristry outlet with responsibility for the managerial and financial operations of the small business.

NMIT provides excellent training facilities for floristry students. These include:

  • Spacious practical workrooms
  • Cool room facility
  • Extensive collection of horticultural material for identification and practical design work
  • Computer laboratory
  • Well-resourced library.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course will have the skills to undertake large scale floral installations and first line management abilities.

Course Duration

Part-time: Two years

Course Commencement Dates

Courses commence in February. There may be scope for continuous enrolment throughout the year.

Entrance Requirements

Prospective students must be employed in the floristry industry and have successfully completed the Certificate III in Floristry.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students enrolling into this course who have completed studies at other institutions should discuss the possibility of being exempted from related units in this course. If a student can demonstrate a full practical and theoretical understanding of the unit from their work then they may discuss the option of being assessed for this in their workplace. Students are eligible for Skills Recognition.

Students, who are granted exemptions for parts of their course, may negotiate an individual mode of delivery with the course coordinator.

Course Outline

To achieve the Certificate IV in Floristry, a total of 32 units of competency must be completed. This comprises:

  • 26 core units (which includes the core of Certificate III in Floristry)
  • 6 elective units.

BSBSBM405A Monitor and manage business operations (50 hrs)
WRFO408B Implement floristry products and services plan (36 hrs)
WRFD404B Create custom made, advanced and large scale floristry designs (150 hrs)
WRRO3B Provide a safe working environment (36 hrs)
WRFD405A Design and manage large scale floral events (60 hrs)
WRFD406A Create floral designs to competition specifications (40 hrs)
WRRO12A Select an e-business model (50 hrs)
BSBSBM403A Promote the business (50 hrs)
BSBSBM404A Undertake business planning (60 hrs)
BSZ404A Train small groups (30 hrs)

Total Hours - 642 (on completion of Certificate III in Floristry)

Assessment Methods

A competency based course assessment is based on student's abilities to achieve unit outcomes. There is the opportunity for workplace delivery and assessment of competencies.

Assessment methods include:

  • demonstration of skills
  • tests and assignments
  • folios
  • third party reports
  • design of large displays at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

Materials

All floral materials and sundries provided.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Floristry.
