Course Description

The Certificate III in Horticulture is suitable for anyone who has an interest in horticulture and a desire to embark on a career in the Industry. No previous experience or prior training in horticulture is required.  

 

Career Opportunities

Graduates will have acquired a range of practical and technical skills that will facilitate entry into a range of industry sectors including, landscape construction and maintenance businesses, local government and retail nurseries. Once completed, graduates will also have the potential to develop career pathways into small business operations.

Course Duration

Full-time: 1 year

Part-time: 3 years (Dependent on the number of subjects completed each year)

Course Commencement Dates

February and if there is sufficient demand, additional courses may commence in July. There may be scope for continuous enrolment throughout the year.

Entrance Requirements

No previous experience or prior training in horticulture is required.

There are two forms of delivery for this horticulture training:

1. Full-time: Training is delivered over four days per week. Prospective students will be interviewed to ascertain if this course is best suited to their needs.

2. Part-time: Training is delivered as night classes with some weekend work. Students are advised to enrol for two night classes per week. Part-time students may elect to enrol in daytime subjects. Prospective students will be interviewed to ascertain if this course is best suited to their needs.

Apply directly to the Horticulture Department.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications or experience.

 

Pathways to Further Study

This qualification may lead to further study in the Certificate IV in Horticulture or other streams, and/or into the Diploma of Horticulture or other streams.

Course Outline

A total of 16 units must be completed. These units have been selected to provide a broad range of skills from a number of sectors including Parks and Gardens, Nursery, Turf and Landscape.

Assessment Methods

A competency based course assessment is based on students' abilities to achieve unit outcomes. There is the opportunity for workplace delivery and assessment of competencies. Assessment methods include:

  • Demonstration of skills
  • Tests and assignments
  • Folios
  • Oral activities
  • Third party reports.

Materials

List of safety equipment and books that need to be purchased by students will be distributed to students early in the course.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate III in Horticulture.
