Description
This course caters for all who have an interest in horticulture, more specifically those who are working in or are interested in employment in the horticultural industry. The training provided has a practical and theoretical focus and areas of study include: plant identification, garden establishment and maintenance, soils and plant nutrition, plant health, garden design, supervision and costing.
Students at NMIT's Fairfield campus will be trained in purpose-built facilities, which include specialist propagation facilities, state-of-the-art greenhouse, plant tissue culture laboratory, computer laboratory, a well-resourced library and extensive gardens for practical work.

The program is broad based and facilitates entry into a range of industry sectors including wholesale and retail nursery, landscape, parks, garden maintenance, revegetation and horticultural businesses.

Duration
The Certificate IV in Horticulture has a nominal duration of 1060 hours and can be completed over a period of one and half years full-time . Students can elect to enrol in single units on a part-time basis.

Courses commence in March. There may be scope for continuous enrolment throughout the year.

Requirements
Entrance requirements include a demonstrated interest in the specific level of vocational study and preparedness for workplace-based assessment of competence. Preference may be given to applicants who can demonstrate relevant horticultural industry experience or previous studies.
Prospective students will be interviewed to ascertain if this course is best suited to their needs. Completion of Year 12 is preferred but not essential.

Students enrolling in this course who have completed studies at other institutions should discuss the possibility of being exempted from related units in this course. If a student can demonstrate a full understanding of the unit from their work, then they may discuss the option of being assessed for units in their workplace. Students are eligible for Skills
Recognition.

| Assessment
Methods
This is a competency-based course where assessment is based on student's abilities to achieve unit outcomes. There is the opportunity for workplace delivery and assessment of competencies. Assessment methods include:
- Demonstration of skills
- Tests and assignments
- Folios
- Verbal presentations
- Third party reports.

List of safety equipment and books that need to be purchased by students will be distributed to students early in the course. Reference material is also available for student loan in the NMIT library.

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Horticulture.
