Course Description

NMIT conducts a 90 hour course covering all aspects of Commercial Hydroponic Crop Production.

The course is conducted by NMIT staff and industry experts.  The aim of the course is to provide participants with the latest knowledge from overseas and Australia to enable them to set up and manage or improve existing commercial hydroponic operations.

Topics covered in the Commercial Hydroponic Crop Production course include: 

  • overview of the industry
  • crop selection
  • location and siting of facilities
  • growing structures, associated equipment and facilities
  • media types and characteristics
  • systems
  • pest, disease and weed control including IPM basics
  • nutrition and crop requirements
  • pH and salinity control
  • crop production cycles and marketing
The program will include a one day visit to a series of commercial hydroponic operations. 

Career Opportunities

Commercial Hydroponic Crop Production is a hydroponics course designed for future operators of hydroponics business, it gives skills to make choices for correct operation and how to run and maintain hydroponic systems.

Aimed at future owners or staff of hydroponic operations.

Course Duration

Part-time: Evening classes - 6pm to 9pm (60 hours)

Excursion (all day), work experience (15 hours) and meetings.

Course Commencement Dates

Courses commence in February. Additional courses may commence in July if there is sufficient demand.

Entrance Requirements

Plant knowledge is recommended.

Assessment Methods

Performing practical tests in the laboratory and greenhouse. Compulsory work for 15 hrs in the greenhouses during the course for level 3, which involves growing crops. Development of a business plan for Hydroponic operation.

Materials

  Secateurs.

Qualification

Units in Certificate IIII in Horticulture and Diploma of Horticulture.
