Course Description

This course provides a broad range of technical, practical and supervisory skills that would be expected of a person responsible for the supervision of a landscape project.

The training provided has a strong practical focus, with students completing a range of landscape activities.

The course features such areas of study as:

  • Supervising landscape project works
  • Staff supervision
  • Costing and budgeting projects
  • Preparing garden designs
  • Irrigation installation
  • Paving
  • Timber construction.

Students at NMIT's Greensborough campus will be trained in a modern facility. In addition, students have access to a plant identification laboratory; indoor workshop and computer laboratory with the latest versions of Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) software.

 

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Certificate IV in Horticulture (Landscape) will receive appropriate training to seek employment in the landscape industry. The qualification is specifically designed to meet the skills required of a person who will generally have responsibility for an assigned range of landscape activities and co-ordinating a number of workers at the worksite.

Course Duration

The Certificate IV in Horticulture (Landscape) has a nominal duration of 910 hours.

This course is offered part-time.

Course Commencement Dates

February. There may be scope for continuous enrolment throughout the year in specific units.

Entrance Requirements

VCE is required for students entering directly from school. Mature age students require the equivalent of Year 12 or previous industry experience.

Applicants may be required to complete a pre entry questionnaire and participate in an informal interview.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students enrolling in this course who have completed studies at other institutions should discuss the possibility of being exempted from related units in this course. If a student can demonstrate a full understanding of the unit from their work, then they may discuss the option of being assessed for units in their workplace. Students are eligible for Skills Recognition .

Pathways to Further Study

This qualification may lead to further study in the Certificate IV in Horticulture (Landscape) or other streams, and/or into the Diploma of Horticulture or other streams.

Course Outline

The Certificate IV in Horticulture (Landscape) requires successful completion of 12 units of competency that relate to landscape work procedures, activities or contexts.

NMIT, in consultation with industry, has constructed a course that will satisfy these packaging rules and are tailored to the requirements of industry.

RTC4206A Supervise landscape projects
RTC3206A Erect timber structures and features
RTC4905A Implement and monitor the enterprise OHS program
RTC4905A Cost a project
RTC4908A Supervise work routines and staff performance
RTE4606A Supervise on-site irrigation installation and construction work
RTF4003A Plan a plant establishment program
RTF4007A Prepare a garden design
RTC4911A Operate within a budget framework
RTF4514A Develop soil survey maps
RTF3220A Implement a paving project

Assessment Methods

A competency based course assessment is based on student's abilities to achieve unit outcomes. Assessment methods include:

  • Demonstration of skills
  • Tests and assignments
  • Folios and log books
  • Oral activities
  • Third party reports.

Materials

List of safety equipment and books that need to be purchased by students will be distributed to students early in the course.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Horticulture (Landscape).
