Course Description

The Certificate III in Horticultue (Parks and Gardens) is offered in two streams - as an apprenticeship and as a general Certificate III. This course provides the training component for the Parks and Gardens apprenticeship. The non-apprenticeship stream caters for all who have an interest in horticulture, more specifically those who are working in or are interested in employment in the parks and gardens/garden management areas of horticulture. The training provided has a strong practical focus and areas of study include: plant identification, garden establishment and maintenance, landscape construction, soils and plant nutrition, plant protection, computers and garden design.

Students at NMIT's Fairfield campus will be trained in purpose-built facilities, which include specialist propagation facilities, state-of-the-art greenhouse, plant tissue culture laboratory, computer laboratory, a well-resourced library and extensive gardens for practical work.

 

Career Opportunities

Graduates of these courses may gain employment where they will use a range of skills including use and maintenance of machinery, plant identification and propagation, lawn maintenance, pest and weed control, installation and maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems, construction and maintenance of gardens, interpretation of garden plans and the appropriate record keeping skills for all of these activities.

Course Duration

The Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens) has a nominal duration of 960 hours.
Apprenticeship: Three years part-time
Full-time: One year, four days per week
Part-time: Up to three years depending on the number of units studied in one year

 

Course Commencement Dates

Apprentices: Courses commence in February, and if there is sufficient demand, additional courses may commence in July. There may be scope for continuous enrolment throughout the year.

Full-time Non-apprenticeship: February.
Part-time Non-apprenticeship: February and July.

Entrance Requirements

There are three forms of delivery for this horticulture training:

1. Apprenticeship: Training is provided one day per week over three years.
To be eligible as an apprentice for this course, participants must be employed in the Parks and Gardens industry and have a signed Training Agreement with the employer and NMIT. The course co-ordinator can provide advice on this.

2. Full-time Non-apprenticeship: Training is delivered over four days per week. Prospective students will be interviewed to ascertain if this course is best suited to their needs.

3. Part-time Non-apprenticeship: Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens). Training is delivered as night classes with some weekend work. Students are advised to enrol for two night classes per week. Prospective students will be interviewed to ascertain if this course is best suited to their needs.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students enrolling in this course who have completed studies at other institutions should discuss the possibility of being exempted from related units in this course. If a student can demonstrate a full understanding of the unit from their work, then they may discuss the option of being assessed for units in their workplace. Students are eligible for Skills Recognition.

Pathways to Further Study

These qualifications may lead to further study at Certificate IV in Horticulture (Parks and Gardens) or other streams, and/or into Diploma of Horticulture (Parks and Gardens) or other streams.

Course Outline

The Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks & Gardens) requires successful completion of 16 units of competency. Seven units are to be selected from Group A (with four designated compulsory units), another six units from Group A and/or B, and an additional three units from Group A, B and/or C. Group C units may be selected from other Training Packages or they may be from the Amenity Horticulture Training Package from level 2, 3 or 4. At least 12 of the units of competency presented must relate to parks and gardens work procedures, activities or contexts.
NMIT, in consultation with industry, has constructed courses that satisfy these packaging rules and are tailored to the requirements of industry.

Assessment Methods

This is a competency based course where assessment is based on student's abilities to achieve unit outcomes. There is the opportunity for workplace delivery and assessment of competencies. Assessment methods include:

  • Demonstration of skills
  • Tests and assignments
  • Folios
  • Oral activities
  • Third party reports.
  • Materials

    List of safety equipment and books that need to be purchased by students will be distributed to students early in the course.

    Qualification

    As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate III in Horticulture (Parks & Gardens).
