Course Description

The first year of this course is the dual Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking) & (Programming) in which the student completes 1030 hours of study. Students successfully completing the first year of the course (Certificate IV) can progress into second year (Advanced Diploma) in which they are able to concentrate their second year studies in one of two streams:

  • Network Security
  • Database Design & Development / Systems Process & Improvement

Graduates could seek employment in the following job roles: E-Commerce Consultant, E-Security Analyst/Manager, Integration Analyst, Integration Centre Specialist, Internet Administrator, Internet Systems Administrator, Intranet Administrator, Intranet Engineer, Middleware Integration Specialist, Network/systems Engineer, Senior Java Developer (major systems integration), Solutions Architect, Team Leader QA/Software testing, Test Analyst, Tester and Web Tester.

Course Duration

Full-time: Two years (The first year is the Certificate IV in Information Technology)

This stream will provide the opportunity for students to enhance and further develop the skills and knowledge introduced in the Certificate IV in Information Technology (completed in first year) with emphasis on gateways, bridges/switches and installation/configuration of routers and networks.

Course Commencement Dates

February and July.

Entrance Requirements

Satisfactory completion of the Certificate IV in Information Technology. (The first year of the Advanced Diploma of Information Technology).

Application Procedure

Apply through VTAC for the first year (Certificate IV). Second year students only are to apply directly to the Information Technology Department.

July intake: Apply directly to the Information Technology Department.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications and/or work experience.

Pathways to Further Study

Students completing the Advanced Diploma may be eligible for exemptions into various Victorian university courses. The amount of credit will depend on the type of university course students wish to enter. Please contact the university entrance office directly. Students will receive 120 credit points (equivalent to one and a half years) if they are accepted into the Bachelor of Information Systems at the Australian Catholic University.

Course Outline

The Advanced Diploma involves 865 hours of tuition, being made up of a number of competencies selected from a pool of units belonging to the Information Technology Training Package. The competencies have been grouped into a number of clusters details of which are given below:

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Information Technology (Network Security).
