Description
This is a nationally accredited course for people who wish to obtain
the Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture from the Training Operations
Bureau.

| Career Opportunities
The manufacture of jewellery in Platinum, Gold and Silver is an
important industry throughout Australia. Skilled workers in small
businesses and larger enterprises perform jewellery production.
A number of apprentices are employed each year.

Duration
Block Release: Over three year apprenticeship (960 hours)

Commencement Dates
Block release commences in January/February each year. Mid year
enrolment occurs only when sustainable class sizes are indicated.

Requirements
Students must be apprenticed in the trade of Jewellery Making and
undergoing competency-based training. Basic skills in reading, writing
and mathematics are necessary. Some ability in manipulating small-scale
tools is advantageous.

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers
on the basis of previous qualifications.

| Pathways
to Further Study
Some jewellers extend their qualifications by undertaking further
study in the areas of gemmology, diamond technology and jewellery
valuation.

| Course Outline
The course is conducted using competency based training and curriculum.
Students are required to successfully complete 11 mandatory units, 30 points value from the Mechanical Manufacturing stream and 58 points from the Jewellery Specialisation stream.
Delivery of the Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture is
by projects, set over the course of three years block release. Students
are required to attend 8 times per year for their block release
training.

| Assessment
Methods
Satisfactory completion of the competencies set by NMIT and reflected
in the student's training plan. Assessment methods include:
- drawing exercises
- report/projects
- production of samples
- satisfactory finishing of hand skills projects
- formal tests as required.

| Materials
Students are required to have and maintain their own basic hand
tools and bring these to practical classes. The jewellery section
will provide class notes and non-precious materials for general
work.
Students are encouraged to work in silver for some of the test articles
to be made; NMIT cannot provide precious metal to students. Should
students choose to work in precious metal then they must provide
their own.

| Qualification
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program
is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will
be awarded the Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture (Apprenticeship).
