The Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE’s fitting and machining courses are studied at the Heidelberg campus where students are given the opportunity to work in a hands-on practical way using industry standard tools and equipment.

The Certificate II in Engineering Studies provides students with pre-employment training as well as pathways into various roles within the engineering industry.

“We work on the lathes a lot making pin punches, centre punches, and we also do tapping. Today we’re making centre punches, a pin punch, and a G-clamp.” – Jake Courts, student

NMIT has an excellent record in placing students from this course into apprenticeships in the engineering trades.

“When I complete the course I’m hoping to get an apprenticeship in plumbing or engineering.” – Remy Salaberger, student

NMIT offers apprenticeship training in the Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade course.

This course provides students with a high level of basic and advanced skills in fitting and machining.

The skills gained by students in this course will enable them to become skilled tradespeople.

“What I like most about this course is that it gives me the opportunity to work with the machines that I work with in my everyday job and to learn off professionals like the teachers. The teachers are very helpful, with a question they will always try to explain the best and you learn from what they did back when they were a tradesman and it helps you out a lot.” – Grant Savari, student

Across both courses, students will work with a range of hand and power tools to perform basic machining processes and handle engineering material amongst many other things.

Lathe milling and grinding operations are included as well as basic welding. Teachers are always on hand to advise and guide students in the use of the tools and equipment. By the end of the course, students will have the appropriate skills to work effectively within the industry.
