Course Description

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills for people either employed or seeking employment in legal administrative support or as legal support staff. The course provides a thorough introduction to the law and its current operation and is therefore useful for employment in private and public legal offices.

Enrolment in this course provides eligibility for provisional membership in the Institute of Legal Executives.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain employment as legal administrative support staff in justice administration and the courts, the police force, financial services such as insurance and banking institutions and property transfer services (conveyancing).

Course Duration

Full-time: Two years
Part-time: Three years (approx.)

Course Commencement Dates

Full-time: February
Part-time: February and July

Entrance Requirements

Satisfactory completion of the VCE or an approved equivalent course, or mature age entry.

Application Procedures

Full-time: Apply through VTAC.

Part-time: Apply directly to the Office Administration Department.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications and/or work experience.

Pathways to Further Study

Students who complete this course are advised to apply for exemptions from units in a degree course at a higher education institution. Pathway arrangements are in place with some universities.

Course Outline

To attain the Advanced Diploma qualification, participants are required to complete the 12 core modules, a minimum of 4 modules from the Elective A modules, and a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 400 nominal hours of units or competency from the Elective B units. One OH&S unit must be included and delivered prior to work placement.

Assessment Methods

Modules are assessed in a variety of ways including tests, practical exercises, case studies, demonstrations, observation, role plays or assignments.

Materials

Students will be required to purchase textbooks and notes. Booklists will be available upon enrolment.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Business (Legal Practice).
