Description
The course aims to provide participants with practical and theoretical
knowledge in the dual areas of event management and operations management.
Visits and inspections of tourism operations in Melbourne and regional
Victoria complement the first year course structure. In addition,
practical event experience is gained through involvement with guest
information and registration and the coordination of an event.
The practical learning environment is enhanced
through active participation with event organisers in developing
plans and realising events as well as researching current industry
trends.

Requirements
There are two ways to apply for entrance into the course. (see
Application Procedures)

Procedures
1. Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC)
VTAC entrance requirements and guidelines apply (see VTAC Guide)
for applicants who have completed Year 12 or its equivalent. Current
Year 12 student entrance is based on a review of the Tourism Department
Supplementary
Pre-Selection Application Form and Enter Score.
Applicants are encouraged to nominate NMIT as their first preference
(NMIT code 69181).
Applicants will be notified in January, with details of enrolment
dates.
2. Direct Applications
The Tourism Department welcomes direct applications for this course.
Applicants enrol in the first year Certificate III course which
represents the first year of the Diploma course. Upon successful
completion, students may apply to enter into the second year of
the Diploma course. Direct applicants must obtain, complete and
forward to the department the Tourism Department Preselection
Application Form.

- Exemptions/Transfers
Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers
on the basis of previous qualifications.

| Pathways
to Further Study
Students who wish to continue their studies can articulate into
the Advanced Diploma of Tourism at NMIT and obtain that qualification
after successfully completing the required units. A further six
months of study is required to obtain this qualification.
Students who wish to continue their studies at university after
successfully completing diploma/advanced diploma qualifications
are eligible to articulate to a university course and obtain substantial
credits toward a tourism degree program. NMIT graduates are currently
continuing their studies at a range of universities in Victoria.
Completing a diploma/advanced diploma program at NMIT prior to
commencing a university degree program is a wise decision as considerable
(HECS) savings are achieved by obtaining substantial (diploma/advanced
diploma) credits.

| Assessment
Methods
Assessment methods have been designed to complement the learning
outcomes. Assessments are ongoing and can occur during class hours,
therefore 100% attendance is expected, except in the case of illness
where special consideration is granted.
Assessment methods include but are not restricted to:
- reports and case studies
- group activities
- verbal and written reports
- discussions and role plays
- practical exercises
- computer simulations
- tests/exams.

| Qualification
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program
is nationally recognised. On successful completion of Semester 1students will
be awarded the Certificate III in Meetings and Events.
On successful completition of the whole course students will be awarded the Diploma of Events.
