Course Description

This part-time one year tour guiding course offered by NMIT is designed for existing volunteer guides / site guides who wish to extend their knowledge as well as obtain a qualification and for those who have good general knowledge of Australian environments, culture, history, politics and nature and want to improve their career options.

Tour Guide, Site Guide and Local Guide.

Course Duration

Part-time: One year

Semester 2: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6.00pm to 9.30pm and Saturdays 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Semester 1: Wednesday evenings 6.00 to 8.30pm, Thursday evenings from 5.30 to 8.00pm and Saturdays from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Field trips to a number of tourism attractions as well as on-site and on-coach tour guide operations experience are a substantive part of the course. Inspection of airport operations is also included.

Course Commencement Dates

February and July.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have good general knowledge of Australian environments, culture, history, politics and nature. In addition applicants must complete a pre-selection application form and may be required to attend an interview.

Application Procedures

Apply directly to the Tourism Department. Two intakes are offered for this course. Applicants are advised to contact the Tourism Department for details. Commences each July and February.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Participants are able to articulate to other tourism courses and obtain credits for units successfully completed.

Assessment Methods

The assessment methods have been designed to complement the learning outcomes described in the modules that comprise the Certificate III in Tourism (Guiding).

The assessment methods include but are not restricted to: on-site, on-coach practical demonstration of operational requirements and commentary abilities: role plays: discussions: group activities: case studies: verbal & written reports.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate III in Tourism (Guiding).
