Course Description

The course aims to provide participants with practical skills, theoretical knowledge and managerial skills to gain employment in Travel Agencies.

Stage 1: commences each July and finishes in early December.
Stage 2: the course recommences in February and finishes in early December.

Stage 1: Participants gain a broad range of 'core' operational skills and an understanding of the tourism industry. This includes tourism industry knowledge, working in teams, customer service, manual reservations, retail /wholesale sales & services including Australian and international airfares, computerised airline reservation system, computer operations (including current software applications), financial operations as well as health, safety and security.

Stage 2:
Participants gain a broad range of supervisory and management skills. This includes managing & leading people, managing quality service, compliance with business laws, conducting business relationships, financial management and managing budgets.

Airline reservations & sales staff
Australian Travel Advisor / International Travel Consultant- Travel Agency Sales

After completion of stage 2:

Supervisor / Manager of Tourism Operations
Branch Manager /Supervisor- Travel Agency: Visitor Information Centre: Car Hire Company: Airline branch office/department: Coach or cruise company.

Course Duration

Stage 1: Full-time: 21 weeks, Classes Monday to Friday, five days per week.
Stage 2: Full-time: 1 year, Classes Monday to Friday, four days per week

Course Commencement Dates

July.

Entrance Requirements

Successful completion of VCE or mature age with relevant work experience.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Participants are able to articulate into other tourism courses and obtain credits for units successfully completed.

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods have been designed to complement the learning outcomes. Assessments are ongoing and can occur during class hours, therefore 100% attendance is expected, except in the case of illness where special consideration is granted.
Assessment methods include but are not restricted to:

  • reports and case studies
  • group activities
  • verbal and written reports
  • discussions and role plays
  • practical exercises
  • computer simulations
  • tests/exams.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. Upon successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate III in Tourism (International Retail Travel Sales) and/or Certificate III in Tourism (Visitor Information Services) and/or Diploma of Tourism (Operations Management).
