Melbourne is an exciting and entertaining city. It is known for its many festivals, fantastic restaurants, and its strong, artistic and entertaining culture. Many tourists come to the city each year to experience the diverse culture it offers.

Tourism is a rapidly growing industry. Many people find it appealing as it offers the ability to work, travel and easily progress with a variety of employers. NMIT has an established Tourism department with a team of teachers that hold a variety of academic and industry qualifications. A broad range of options are provided to students wishing to obtain tourism qualifications. Every effort is made to link their career aspirations of individual students with a host company. Past students have responded positively to their learning experiences at NMIT.

“The NMIT Tourism department has been set up to give students the best opportunities when joining the tourism workforce. We provide many excursions and opportunities for students to mix with people in the industry. We have a tourism employment seminar where we talk about specific areas and roles within industry. We also take students out on a number of excursions where they get to experience the tourism industry first hand. They plan and develop tours, they work at events and they get as much practical and hands-on experiences available. That’s part of the main aim we like to give our students.” Stuart Christelow, Head of Tourism

A range of subjects are taught which helps students get an idea of the industry and the different pathways it offers. NMIT offers several exciting tourism courses including tourism management and event management, tourism and travel agency operations, natural and cultural heritage tourism and tour guiding as well as several part-time courses. The tourism management and event management course is offered as a two-year dual diploma. The first year aims to provide students with a broad overview of the travel and tourism industry. Second year students can choose to study either tourism management or event management. Tourism management provide participants with the skills and knowledge in the areas of marketing, product development and operations management. Event management provide students with the skills and knowledge to gain employment in the events industry.  Employment opportunities exist in the areas of meetings, events, incentives, conferences, exhibits, festivals and functions. There is a strong focus on practical learning and active participation in new and established events.

“The course I am currently studying is event management. I am a second year student studying wine tourism, events management and financial budgets.  I am really enjoying the wine tourism course aspect of it all. We are going to running our own wine show shortly. That should be very interesting. With the event management aspect, we have been involved with a lot of outdoor events notably the flower and garden show, and the caravan and camping super show. We volunteered for ten days and learned lots of different aspects of how to run a major outdoor event. We are currently working on 9our own expo where all the students of our class are involved in putting on an NMIT tourism and employment seminar. That’s coming up in September so we are all working hard towards that.” Student A

There is a strong focus on interactive learning. Students often have the chance to go on field trips conducted throughout Victoria as well as participating in exhibitions, events, and festivals. The friendly atmosphere, enjoyable class sizes, and broad range of studies are just a few of the attractions.

“I am doing tourism and operations and management. I’ve got a few favourite subjects. I like source and package. We are constructing a tour at the moment for all the first year tourism students. First year's very different to second year. First year was really easy second year was a lot more intense, a lot more things to hand out , a lot more work, a lot more doing things by yourself rather than getting people to help you.” Student B

Students are surrounded by sophisticated learning environment that utilises the latest technologies and equipment. These facilities include multimedia internet labs, an airline and hotel reservation centre, a telephone call centre and large projection screens in classroom.

“I’d say I’m looking forward to travelling more. I like to move around, I don’t like to stay in the same spot. At the end of the year when I finish this course, I will be going to Africa, and then to China and Thailand for six months. I would really like to work for Qantas. That’s my main goal. I know it’s going to be hard but I am just going to keep trying. Basically just travelling around, moving around, seeing different cultures, seeing different countries.” Student B

The tourism department has twice received the finalist award at the Ansett Tourism award. This prestigious industry award verifies the exceptional standard of tourism training at NMIT.
