Course Description

This program is for adults of non-English speaking background at upper intermediate to advanced level, who want to develop their English for work, study or social purposes.

Program content is dependent on the needs of students and topics covered depend on the availability of resources. The program provides experience and competence in a wide range of language functions needed for:

  • participation in the workplace
  • access to further study and training
  • participation in the community
  • independent self expression and critical thinking.

Career Opportunities

These courses prepare students to apply for further study or training and for work.

Course Duration

Enrolments are for one year or one semester. Some places may be available at the beginning of each term.

Students can study full-time up to 24 hours a week or part-time in the evening, 4 or 5 hours a week.

Course Commencement Dates

February.

Entrance Requirements

All applicants are interviewed before placement in the program.

Apply directly to the Vocational Pathways Department.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Students who achieve a Certificate IV in ESL are able to apply for courses in further study. However, students intending to go on to mainstream courses are strongly advised to complete the Further Study stream of the Certificate.

Course Outline

The needs and interests of particular learner groups will determine the certificates that will be delivered each semester. Due to the varying nature of student demand, some certificates will not be available every semester. In each of the courses students are assisted in developing the computer skills necessary for their area of interest.

While they are studying in the Vocational Pathways Department, students are assisted in clarifying their short and long term goals.

Certificate III & IV in ESL Access

Students in the Certificate in ESL Access are enrolled in 4 core modules and in elective modules, which are integrated into the course. Entry Level: ISLPR 2 and 2+

Employment Access for Overseas Qualified Professionals Program (OQP)

This program is run under the Certificate IV in ESL Professional and is aimed at preparing migrant professionals with good English language skills and recognised qualifications to enter the workforce in their professional capacity. It includes 6 weeks of classroom input and 4 weeks of industry placement. The program has a very high success rate in terms of employment outcomes. Entry Level: ISLPR 2+/3

Assessment Methods

There are no exams. Assessment is continuous and ongoing, focusing on the process of learning as well as the competency requirements of the modules of the ESL Framework. As part of the assessment, students develop a folio of work.

Materials

Students are required to provide their own stationery and writing materials.

Students also have access to a range of facilities and services to assist with their learning and well-being while at TAFE.

  • Independent Learning Centre
  • computer and language labs
  • vocational counselling
  • library facilities
  • sports and recreational facilities.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework these programs are nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate III and /or Certificate IV in the ESL Framework in the Access, Employment and/or Further Study streams and/or the Certificate IV in the Professional stream.
