Course Description

The Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing is designed to provide participants with the skills in writing and editing for employment or further tertiary study. Participants will develop awareness of industry standards and demands and develop knowledge of the markets available to the professional writer and editor.

Career Opportunities

The Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing is for those wishing to improve their writing and editing skills for employment, freelance work or further study.

Course Duration

Full-time: One year - 584 hours
Part-time: Two years (after completion of Certificate IV)

Course Commencement Dates

February.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants should submit a writing folio and attend a selection interview. The folio must include varied examples (such as short pieces, extracts from long pieces, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, academic writing and so on).

Application Procedure

Full-time: Apply through VTAC. An NMIT Supplementary Application Form is also required.
Part-time: Apply directly to the Vocational Pathways Department with Direct Application Form.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

The Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing provides the possibility of articulation to university courses such as La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Arts – Journalism and Professional Writing/Literature majors. Similar courses are available at RMIT, Deakin and Victoria University of Technology.

Assessment Methods

Assessment will be continuous and will be based on the quality of work submitted and attendance and participation and will vary from module to module. Assessment methods may include the following:

  • written exercises
  • research reports
  • tests
  • oral presentations
  • submission of projects, articles, stories,
  • novel
  • role plays
  • interviews
  • field visits
  • contribution to classroom discussion
  • demonstrations
  • collections of information.

Materials

Students are given a booklist at the start of the course and are required to provide their own writing materials, stationery and computer discs.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing.
