Course Description

This stream of study covers a wide range of topics that will enable students to gain and develop knowledge in both theoretical and practical aspects of daily vineyard operations.

Training for this qualification is based on guidelines outlined in the Food Processing Industry Training Package – Wine Sector.  Training packages are documents that form part of the National Training Framework that are designed to make training simple, flexible and relevant.

To be awarded this qualification, it is necessary for students to complete a selection of competencies contained within the training package.  In the Certificate III Food Processing (Wine) - Wine Grape Growing Stream, a list of competencies has been developed to meet this qualification.  Some competencies are identified as compulsory.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the certificate II may gain employment as vineyard operators for the production of quality grapes.  Graduates of the certificate III may gain employment in the grape growing area for the production of quality grapes for wine production.

Course Duration

The Certificate II course is 600 hours in length.

The program is available as a part-time evening program, as an on-line program accessed through NMITs flexible on-line facility, and can be undertaken as a formal traineeship.

The Certificate III course is 400 hours if undertaken after satisfactory completion of the Certificate II. The total time taken to complete the traineeship is approximately two years.

For those directly entering the Certificate III, the length of the course will be determined by the prerequisites for the competencies chosen, but is around 1000 hours in length, and can be taken as an apprenticeship, or alternatively part-time.

The course will commence in the first week of March.  Owing to the influences of seasonal variability and the aim to coincide all theoretical and practical study with vineyard operations, the commencement date may differ slightly each year.  It is recommended that potential students contact the program co-ordinator as early as possible.
