Course Description

The broad aims of this course are:

  • To provide people, with a disability or special learning needs, with the skills to access preferred pathways such as:

    - Further education
    - Entry into paid employment or voluntary work
    - Other adult service providers
  • To empower students to make life choices by providing learning that is experiential and relevant

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may gain employment at base level entry points into a wide variety of industries or may move into other appropriate adult options and or further training.

Course Duration

Full-time: day (900 hours maximum) over one or two years
Part-time: day/evening available

Course Commencement Dates

Full-time: January
Part-time: (day) February
Part-time: (evening) March

Entrance Requirements

  • Minimum age 15 years
  • Have special learning needs (possibly associated with intellectual, learning, psychological disability).
  • Be in search of an adult option
  • Be interested in working in an NMIT-based program.
  • Have the support of his or her family or advocate

Application Procedure

  • The applicant can be recommended by a professional person who has a good knowledge of the applicant or the applicant may refer themselves.
  • The referee or applicant is required to complete the "Application for Interview" Form.
  • A representative of NMIT interviews the applicant and family or advocate.
  • Applications close 31 October.
  • Applicants will be interviewed in November/December.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Successful completion of the Certificate I in Transition Education provides a general foundation after which participants can follow their own interests in choosing to undertake further accredited training, work opportunities or other adult pathways.

Students who complete the Certificate I in Transition Education may move onto the following courses:

2212AKC Certificate II in General Education for Adults

Vocational electives at AQF levels I or II for this course can be chosen from any accredited courses / training packages. Students will therefore receive credit if they enrol in subsequent training programs that contain these modules / competencies:

(Vocational Focus)

Any accredited modules from vocational courses or units of competency from training packages at AQF Levels 1 or 11.

As a general rule, the nominal hours from existing modules or competencies from training packages should be doubled to meet the learning needs for this client group.

Assessment Methods

Assessment need not take place at the end of every learning outcome and students may be assessed using an integrated approach. Learning outcomes may be grouped together and assessment of the module may be achieved through an activity that takes account of all learning outcomes. Assessment methods will respect the individual's learning style and may include:

  • discussion
  • demonstration
  • oral questioning
  • short answer
  • practical exercise
  • role play
  • recorded report
  • observation.


Methods may be varied in response to specific needs of the learner. The integrity of the learning outcome and assessment criteria should be maintained.

Materials

Stationery, calculator, watch, protective clothing and footwear appropriate to vocational electives selected by student.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate I in Transition Education.
