Description
Certificate I in Work Education is suitable for students with disabilities particularly those with individual learning needs. An individual education program plan is developed for each student by setting objectives to meet their needs. Areas covered involve personal goals which may be about job choice, vocational studies, literacy, numeracy, training and practical placement experiences. The course aims to:
- Prepare students who wish to gain employment
- Prepare students to take part in further vocational education and training

Requirements
- Minimum age 16 years.
- Have special learning needs (possibly associated with intellectual,
learning or psychological disability)
- Have potential and motivation for employment.
- Be interested in working in an NMIT-based program.
- Have the support of his or her family or advocate.

Procedure
1. The applicant can be recommended by a professional person who
has a good knowledge of the applicant and the nature of the Work
Education Course, or the applicant may refer themselves.
2. The referee is required to complete an "Application for Interview" Form.
3. A representative of NMIT interviews the applicant and family
or advocate.
4. Applications close 31 October. Applicants will be interviewed
in November/December.

- Exemptions/Transfers
Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers
on the basis of previous qualifications.

to Further Study
Successful completion of the Certificate I in Work Education provides
a general foundation after which participants can follow their own
interests in choosing to undertake further accredited training or
seeking work opportunities. Examples of courses are:

Module VBM686 Numeracy and Mathematics - Introductory is a national module contained
in a number of courses including:

Therefore there is credit transfer into this courses and any other
courses that contain the module.
Participants may receive credit for vocational electives undertaken
as part of the Certificate I in Work Education if they enrol in
subsequent courses that contain those modules/competencies.

Total Hours - 1200
Participants complete a package of modules selected from state-wide
accredited vocational training courses at ASF level 1 or 2. Modules
include occupational health and safety relevant to the field of
employment. NMIT develops new modules in consultation with local
industries and submits these to VETAB for accreditation.

| Assessment
Methods
Assessment need not take place at the end of every learning outcome
and students may be assessed using an integrated approach. Learning
outcomes may be grouped together and assessment of the module may
be achieved through an activity that takes account of all learning
outcomes. Assessment methods will respect the individual's learning
style and may include:
- discussion
- demonstration
- oral questioning
- short answer
- practical exercise
- role play
- recorded report
- observation.
Methods may be varied in response to specific needs of the learner.
The integrity of the learning outcome and assessment criteria should
be maintained.

Stationery, calculator, watch, protective clothing and footwear
appropriate to vocational electives selected by student.

| Qualification
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program
is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will
be awarded the Certificate I in Work Education.
