Course Description

YAMEC is an accredited ESL course designed for young migrants who haven't completed secondary schooling and who need to develop further English language and literacy skills.
It will also provide the skills necessary for students to access further training and employment. It is the first step in TAFE on an educational/vocational pathway into mainstream education, Australian Apprenticeships and /or employment.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course are eligible to apply for a range of courses.

Course Duration

YAMEC 1
2007 and 2008: 36 weeks, 20 hours per week

YAMEC 2
2007 and 2008: 36 weeks, 25 hours per week

YAMEC VCAL
36 weeks, 25 hours per week

Course Commencement Dates

February.

Entrance Requirements

Young migrants, 16 to 26 years, who have had disrupted or incomplete schooling in their country of origin and young migrants who have been out of the school system for a long time and may find secondary school inappropriate.

Application Procedures

Apply directly to the Youth Unit.
Austudy/Youth Allowance "Approved Activity" applies for full-time study.

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Pathways to Further Study

Students may apply for other TAFE courses or seek employment.

  • Australian studies
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Computers
  • Work Experience (2 weeks) *dependent on work readiness and language levels
  • Vocational Electives
  • Assistance with study skills and independent learning
  • Assistance with practical matters, eg,
  • Centrelink, Youth Allowance, housing, health issues and Job search
  • Health and Fitness
  • VCAL Foundation and intermediate


YAMEC also provides opportunities for team building and cooperative learning in a culturally diverse environment through:

  • classroom projects
  • excursions
  • community links

Assessment Methods

Assessment is competency based and may include practical demonstrations, oral questioning, role plays, case studies and projects.
