Closing Dates for Application for a Certificate, Diploma or Degree
To be eligible to be invited to attend NMIT’s annual graduation ceremony:
21 February 2007 - Only eligible diploma and/or degree level graduands will be invited to attend the annual NMIT Graduation Ceremony in May.
To collect certificate[s] from NMIT:
21 February 2007 - All eligible applicants will be notified by mail in June to collect their certificate[s] from NMIT. [ie unless diploma and/or degree level graduands wishing to attend NMIT’s annual Graduation Ceremony in May]. Certificates will be mailed to students living outside the metropolitan area.
31 August 2007 - All eligible applicants will be notified by mail in November to collect their certificate[s] from NMIT. Certificates will be mailed to students living outside the metropolitan area.
NB: Certificates WILL NOT be held over for the graduation ceremony the following year.
What happens after my certificate application has been lodged via Round 1 – [February closing date]?
- After the closing date, applications will be read and checked by your department to ensure you have successfully completed the course.
- If necessary, the department will contact you directly if there are any problems with your application eg subjects or results missing.
- If your application is not approved, the Head of Department will write to you and explain the reason your application is not approved.
- Your successful application will be approved by your faculty and will proceed to be approved by NMIT Board of Studies.
- NMIT Council will ratify all successful applicants.
- Eligible diploma level students will be invited to attend NMIT’s annual graduation ceremony.
- You must RSVP to attend the graduation ceremony to the Awards Officer prior to the due date on the invitation. Late returns will not be accepted and you will graduate in absentia. Non return of the graduands RSVP prior to the due date, will automatically be made in absentia.
- Certificate level students will be mailed instructions explaining the process to collect and to sign the certificate register in June. Certificates will only be mailed to students living outside the metropolitan area.
What happens after my certificate application has been lodged via Round 2 – [August closing date]?
The process is the same as Round 1, but a graduation ceremony is not held at this time of the year.

Who can apply for a graduation certificate?
A student that has successfully completed a Nationally Recognised Training course. Refer to Qualifications. A graduand must complete an application form to receive an award.
I have completed a short course and would like a certificate, who do I contact?
Students that have successfully completed a short course, must contact the department directly in order to obtain a certificate. View Short Courses.
Can I attend NMIT’s graduation ceremony I completed a certificate level course?
No. Only diploma and degree level graduands that have submitted an application form prior to the closing date and have successfully completed a Nationally Recognised Training course will be eligible to attend NMIT's’ graduation ceremony.
Certificate level graduands are invited to collect their award from the Preston Campus and must sign the certificate register. Certificates will only be mailed to graduates living outside the metropolitan area.
What happens at the graduation ceremony?
- Introduction of the Official Party
- Procession of the Official Party
- Welcome speech by NMIT, Chief Executive Officer and introduction of the Guest Speaker
- Graduation Address by Guest Speaker
- Presentation of Awards by NMIT Council Members
- Procession out of the venue of the Official Party
How long will the graduation ceremony be?
Approximately two hours depending on the number of graduands. Supper is provided for graduates and guests after the closing of the ceremony. The ceremony is not suitable for young children.
Will I have to pay a fee to graduate/attend NMIT’s graduation ceremony?
No. There is no charge to the graduate.
Will my guests pay a fee to attend NMIT’s graduation ceremony?
No. There is no charge for your guests.
When will I receive my invitation to attend the graduation ceremony?
Diploma level graduands will receive an invitation in April to attend the graduation ceremony. Graduands must RSVP prior to the return date [on the invitation], to be eligible to attend the ceremony and receive specific details of the ceremony and guest passes for entry into the ceremony. Late returns will not be accepted.
What do I do on arrival at the graduation venue?
- Enter the venue at ground level.
- You must register your arrival at the appropriate Check In Desk, you will be issued with further instructions regarding the ceremony.
- You will be directed, by ushers to collect your academic regalia.
Please ensure you are on time, late arrivals will not be able to participate in the ceremony.
Where will I be sitting at the graduation ceremony?
Graduands sit in allocating seating, in the front of the hall. Ushers will be on hand to direct you and your guests to a seat . You will not sit with your guests.
How many guests passes will be issued to me for the graduation ceremony?
Each graduand will be issued a maximum two (2) guest passes. Graduands do not require a ticket for themselves. Security will check and collect all guests passes from guests prior to entry into the hall.
Can I obtain extra guest passes for the graduation ceremony?
No. Seating regulations are set by the venue. If seating becomes available graduands will be advised by mail. It is not possible to book or reserve extra passes. If extra seating does become available, passes will be issued on a ‘first in – first served’ basis.
What should I wear to the graduation ceremony?
We suggest you dress as if attending a formal job interview. Eg women - semi formal dress with closed or court shoes; men - suit or dress pants and shirt with closed shoes. We strongly discourage wearing jeans, thongs or runners.
Will I wear an academic gown at the graduation ceremony?
Yes. All graduating students must wear academic regalia – black gown and the appropriate stole for your award.
What colour stole will I wear over my academic gown at the graduation ceremony?
NMIT Council has approved the following colours for use with the Fields of Study.
- Applied Art - Ruby
- Building - Cherry
- Business - Ultramarine
- Engineering - Parma Violet
- Koorie - Burnt Orange
- Performing Arts - Fuchsia
- Personal Services - Jade
- Rural and Horticulture - Spectrum Green
- Social and Community Services - Buttercup
When should my guests arrive at the graduation ceremony?
Guests may arrive between 5.30pm-7.30pm. All guests must be seated in the hall by 7.40pm. Guests will not be permitted entry into the hall after 7.40pm.
Will there be a photographer at the graduation ceremony?
Yes. We recommend that you have your photograph taken before the ceremony, after you have put on your academic regalia. Prices start from $22.00 for 5” x 7” print in a folder. NB: Payment for photographs is only cash or cheque payable on the night.
Can I purchase NMIT memorabilia at the graduation ceremony?
Yes. NMIT graduation bears, mugs, key rings and tee shirts are available on the night. NB: Payment for memorabilia is cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card facilities are available on the night.
Can I graduate in absentia?
Yes. Graduands must have successfully lodged an application via the Round 1 process. If you do not attend the ceremony you will graduate in absentia. Graduands that do not return the RSVP prior to the due date will automatically graduate in absentia.

Do you or your guests require special assistance at the graduation ceremony?
If special assistance is required on the evening, you should advise the Awards Officer after you have received your information and guest passes for the ceremony.
