Bachelor of Equine Studies

What is equine studies?

The equine industry in Australia is the fifth biggest contributing $6.2 billion a year to the country's economy. The equine industry is one of Australia 's top income providers with more than one million people involved in the industry and more than 250,000 people belonging to equine clubs and associations. There are about 12,500 horse breeders in Australia .

Equine studies is a specialised animal science that in combination with aspects of business management is essential for the successful operation of an equine enterprise. Unlike other animal production systems, the equine industry requires horses that are not only produced and grown efficiently, but attain some level of athletic performance, remain sound and interact in a cooperative manner with humans. As a result, modern equine management demands a depth of scientific knowledge and skills with an intensive and individual focus and this requires specialised study.

Why study equine at NMIT?

NMIT's Bachelor of Equine Studies provides specialised knowledge of equine business management and a broad knowledge of the diverse sectors of the national and international equine industry with all their new developments and practices. Along with this knowledge, the course develops the ability to work professionally and productively in the equine industry.

NMIT has supplied education and training to the equine industry for 14 years. The institution has made a significant contribution to the industry since 1994. During that time NMIT has established a 300-hectare thoroughbred stud farm, Northern Lodge. The lodge is a renowned training centre for equine studies and has a strong reputation in the industry. NMIT is the only Victorian TAFE institute to establish a full-time course in equine studies at bachelor degree level.

What is the cost of studying at NMIT?

Students can enrol in NMIT's bachelor courses for three year's full time, or have the option of enrolling part time.

The degree programs are fee for service and costs AU$12,000 each year, however all courses have the option of FEE-HELP for eligible students. No amenities fees are charged for any higher education courses.

The tuition fees are calculated based on full-time study. Part-time fees per year depend on subjects chosen (part-time study is only available to domestic students).

Where will studying equine at NMIT take me?

The degree offers three years of specialised equine study aimed at assisting students develop a scientific understanding of the horse, its environment and current management practices. It focuses on developing the ability to apply this knowledge to the management of horses under a wide range of conditions.

Subject areas covered in the degree include equine anatomy, physiology, development, health, nutrition, conformation, genetics, behaviour, locomotion and reproduction as well as management of performance and breeding horses, pastures and facilities. The course provides knowledge of farm business management principles, enterprise planning and analysis, accounting, financial management, business law and equine legislation and law. Students will learn to design, conduct, record, analyse and report valid and reliable scientific research as well as acquire an ability to critically examine and evaluate equine research studies.

The career opportunities include:

  • Equine stud managers/owners and/or operators. Equine enterprises include; rehabilitation, breeding, sales, training and showing establishments
  • Equine education at the school, TAFE and university level (may require a Diploma of Education)
  • Bloodstock agents
  • Equine consultants
  • Equine Industry marketing, promotions and journalism
  • Working in a wide range of equine enterprises
  • Government advisors on equine industry/policy
  • Equestrian sports management
