The Victorian State Government has issued a certificate of accreditation to NMIT to provide and to confer the Bachelor of Applied Aquaculture pursuant to section 11 of the Tertiary Education Act 1993.
NMIT is also endorsed to deliver the course to overseas students pursuant to section 6 of the Tertiary education Act 1993.
NMIT is one of the largest and most successful government funded providers of tertiary education in Australia. Based in Melbourne it provides a comprehensive range of accredited courses from certificate to bachelor degree in both Australia and internationally. NMIT is primarily a teaching institution with an applied research culture that supports teaching, learning and assists industry and economic development.
NMIT aims are
- to offer applied and specialised programs at associate degree and bachelor degree level and higher education professional qualifications at bachelor degree level and masters level in partnership with the university sector.
- to promote a research culture through the conduct of applied research that supports teaching and learning and that supports economic development.
As a specialist institute in primary industries NMIT offers the Bachelor of Applied Aquaculture to full fee paying students. In addition, NMIT has accreditation for its Bachelor of Viticulture and Winemaking and Bachelor of Equine Studies.
NMIT also provides specialist qualifications in music and is developing a Bachelor of Music (Contemporary Australian Music).
NMIT bachelor degree courses are designed to produce graduates with
- academic knowledge learned and applied in context
- high level technical knowledge and skills
- generic skills for employment
NMIT has governance arrangements to oversee the academic standards of its higher education programs.

Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Higher Education Program Committee are to set policy and regulations including entry standards, admission, progression, assessment, course regulations and to monitor the overall academic standards of the program.
Membership
- A representative of the council.
- A minimum of two academics, external to the institution, who are knowledgeable in relevant disciplines and who have had appreciable experience in the development of higher education policies and procedures.
- The academic head of the Higher Education programs.
- The senior lecturer of each degree program .
- A representative of the chief librarian knowledgeable in the relevant discipline areas.
The chair of the committee is elected from amongst the non-NMIT members. The committee meets at least four times per year, more frequently if necessary.
When additional degree courses are offered by NMIT that the role of the Higher Education Program Committee be changed so that it has responsibility for setting policy and monitoring the academic standards for all degree courses (with a suitable augmentation of membership) and report to Council as at present. Each degree course will have its own degree committee as at present reporting to the Higher Education Program committee.
