    What is illustration?

    Illustrators use a variety of media to give form to visual ideas, stories and information; illustration can therefore be defined as communication through image making. This program of study provides students with the flexibility to pursue their stylistic preferences, whilst developing detailed knowledge and understanding of the wider Australian and International illustration scene.

    Designed to prepare students for a variety of employment options in the contemporary illustration industry, this academic degree includes the study of theory, practice and new technologies in a contemporary cultural context that includes a strong focus on the global nature of this industry.

    The Australian Bureau of Statistics related to industry specific employment have indicated that approximately 25% of people employed within the Arts and other cultural occupations were in the design/illustration field. Illustration and its related areas is a fast growing multi-million dollar industry, with people engaged in a vibrant and innovative range of fields such as: animation, games, publishing, advertising, design events and exhibitions. This industry is extremely diverse with a broad range of career options in which educated, highly motivated and multi-skilled illustrators have the opportunity to work across most contemporary illustration and design fields.

    Why study illustration at NMIT?

    NMIT is recognized as having provided quality education and training to the illustration and design industry for more than 30 years. Throughout this period it has also played a significant role in developing illustration curricula since 1986.

    To maintain its level of professionalism NMIT has invested heavily in establishing major facilities to industry standards that support higher education in the illustration/design industry.

    The Bachelor of Illustration offers three years of specialised illustration and design study and is structured around three strands of learning- Creative Practice, Creative Tools & Skills, and Media & Context.

    What is the cost of studying at NMIT?

    Students can enroll in NMIT's bachelor courses for three year's full time, or have the option of enrolling part time.

    The degree programs are fee for service and cost AU$12,000 each year, however all courses have the option of FEE-HELP for eligible students. No amenities fees are charged for any higher education courses.

    The tuition fees are calculated based on full-time study. Part-time fees per year depend on subjects chosen (part-time study is only available to domestic students).

    Where will studying illustration at NMIT take me?

    The Illustration/Design industry is extremely diverse with a broad range of career options. Illustrators are increasingly requiring broad-based knowledge across all related areas, to deal with issues from technological advancement to self-management skills.
