Course Description

This course aims to provide essential training for people employed in the public sector.  The course will assist people in: enhancing existing skills, building new understanding of Government processes, and complying with and working with legislation. There is an inbuilt facility for the provision of skills recognition.

This comprehensive program is designed to assist people seeking promotion opportunities and an enhanced career path.

Course Duration

This course may be offered during the day or in the evening.
Part-time: Six months involving one evening per week plus the supervised completion of various work based assessment tasks.

Course Commencement Dates

This course will commence in July, 2008.

Entrance Requirements

There are no academic pre-requisites for this course. The expectation is that successful applicants will have attained an educational level that will enable achievement of set objectives.  Applicants need to be currently working in the public sector.

Apply directly to the Business Enterprise Centre (BEC).

Skills Recognition - Exemptions/Transfers

Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) may be available based on skills and knowledge already acquired by the applicant through previous study or equivalent studies of a similar standard at another institution or from various work and life skills.

Pathways to Further Study

The successful completion of the Certificate IV in Government integrates directly into the Diploma of Government and may allow students to continue study into a range of other tertiary programs. Entrance requirements and exemptions vary between this course and university courses.

Course Outline

Participants must successfully complete fifteen units of competency to qualify for the certificate.

The Business Enterprise Centre  is offering the following combination of units for this qualification:

Compulsory Units

PSPETHC401A Uphold and support the values and principles of public service (40 hrs)
PSPGOV422A Apply government processes (30 hrs)
PSPGOV402B Deliver and monitor service to clients (30 hrs)
PSPPOL404A Support policy implementation (30 hrs)
PSPLEGN401A Encourage compliance with legislation in the public sector (25 hrs)
PSPGOV408A  Value diversity (30 hrs)
PSPGOV412A Use advanced workplace communication strategies (50 hrs)
PSPOHS301A Contribute to workplace safety (30 hrs)

Plus five electives.

Note:  Students can enrol in any of the above as stand-alone units.

Assessment Methods

The method of assessment will include a combination of workplace based assignments, tests, presentations, case studies and class participation. 

Materials

Students will be supplied with all required training materials.  Additional materials will be provided by the class teacher, as required, once the course commences.

Qualification

As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.  On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Government.
